Searching for a Brutal, and Harsh Setting.

Hey Hal. :) I just know what I like. Believe me I LOVE Bluffsides and Interludes ROCKS! :) You guys at Thundere-re I mean Mystic Eye know what you're doing!

Psion, well may that's what threw me more than anything was the excution...but still I didn't see much more than powerful dungeon crawl. Perhaps I need to re-evaulate that stance...

Just got a good look at Oathbound, yeah, brutal and harsh. Not my cup of tea but my true first impression was far differnt than the one the playtester's description gave me. Not bad. Interesting art. Very yellow. Very Epic. Looks like a wreck between scarred lands and planescape. Kind of a black hole campaign setting, you can get there but you cant leave. I like having a multiverse at my fingertips. It sounded boring but turned out to be pretty good. I like the city layer idea Jim, wonder where you got that? ;-)

Not sure I'd compare them that way but certainly Jester it's HARSH place. If I wasn't already set in Scarred lands terriority, Oathbound would be my choice.

Hi Hong-
Now if I said in a nice way, it would not be brutal and harsh way ;)
Hmmmm, perhaps I should put up a definition of "Macavalian"?

It's spelt "Machiavellian", pal.

Basically defined as an LE alignment.

Any setting can be harsh and unforgiving if run properly... that is the way any PC should live in my mind. There are sections on just about any setting that could be run this way. Ravenloft and Scarred Lands are the best in my opinion, depending on whether you want horror or just blood and grit.

This thread has got me thinking - it seems there are tons of "harsh" campaign settings out there. What would one say if I asked for a "optimistic, high adventure" campaign setting Is there such a thing in the d20 market? And if not, is there a place for such a thing?

Ya, Forgotten Realms, Greyhawk to a certain extent. I'm still pluging away at my own Anime Science fiction/ fantasy setting but i kinda wish someone else would do the work and publish such a setting.

Scarred Lands is a pretty harsh and brutal setting. The campaign begins after a divine war between the gods and titans that ravaged the entire world. So it's kind of like Mad Max meets D&D. :)

Actually you can do that in Scarred Lands too. It's harsh yes, but not so much that there's not a chance that good will or the Titans will triumph. Just so happens it just not EASY to be hero, that's all. No one said it would be though.

another suggestion

Do Greyhawk in the From the Ashes timeframe. Iuz has expanded considerably, as has the Scarlet brotherhood, The Great Kingdom is splintered among undead/fiend factions, There is a great big rampaging humanoid empire of the Pomarj on the move, and fiends are everywhere. The "good" kingdoms are weakened from wars and everybody is running scared, particularly with the hosts of fiends that plague the lands.

Scarred lands is good, and I have heard one of my players say my ravenloft game was the harshest campaign he has ever played in so it is what you make of it. Hunt rise of evil has a ravenloft evil feel to it and its products and lots of inquisitor priests running around.
