Secondary class for Vow of Poverty Monk.

Our Dm recently had a plot in our campaign that some of our characters (the one that wanted to be part of this) stepped through a portal they came out their true self (How we wanted our characters with the addition of books as most of our characters are original from 3.0). Anyways, I convinced my DM that giving my character the VoP was not making my 12 Monk/2 Spellfire much more powerful after losing my magic items. Story/character wise this works great but I got rid of Spellfire Channeler and am looking at 1 of 3 classes to replace it. The Swordsage from Tome of Battle - Book of Nine Swords, the Kensai from the Complete Warrior, or the Ki Swordsman from the Quintessential Fighter 2. I am open to suggestions on the classes as they all can get by without weapons.

Also, I am pretty sure I know the answer but I will ask. My in game twin brother and I have matched/paired Legacy Items and was wondering if a storyline driven hereditary item could be allowed for a VoP character.

No question, Swordsage. And no you can't over-ride a vow just because of a legacy item.

I prefer the Kensai option myself. Terrific synergy with the Monk/VoP Combo, enhancing your natural attacks etc...

NO - legacy items will not work here, you can't use any items. period. As a compromise, maybe your DM will allow you to retool more than 3 levels so that you can get more levels of Kensai and re-choose a couple attribute score selections to maximise the new combo.

Of what you listed, I'd go with Kensai or more Monk levels.

What other books are available for you to use?

Soulknife or one of the other Psionic classes, if you're using psionics from the XPH.

Depending upon your interpretation of VoP, the Soulknife's Mindblades are considered to be every bit as much a class feature- IOW, not a VoP-barred weapon- as the Tattooed Monk's magical tattoos (already explicitly OKed for use with VoP).

Furthermore, if you're using DCv1, you can take the feat Unorthodox Flurry, which lets you use a specific weapon as a Monk Weapon, which would let you use the Mindblades with your Flurry.

The Psion, Wilder, Ardent, Divine Mind and Lurker all have abilities & powers that are not at all limited by the VoP (though you'd lose some weapon or armor use with some of them), and may even be quite synergistic with it.

Well now wacky is being harsh...but certainly has plenty of wushu type flavor. More so than Kensai I think. But that's just me.

*still can't believe someone takes a VoP and still expects to keep the ability to use ANY item (even a legacy item) as well* That's like trying to having the horse before the cart is even built!
