Secret maps

I have heard that applying milk to paper, you can create maps where the secret milk drawings can only be seen in sharp light or by holding a match or lighter close to the paper.. Unfortunately, it doesn't work out for me..

I have also heard lemon juice as an option, but that also failed.

So, how do I make a secret map to only be viewable in lighter-light? How thin/thick does the paper have to be, and how do I make the secret part, and please be specific, because I really stink at this so far ;-)

I haven't tried this since I was a kid writing secret messages with my best friend, but what I remember is that you paint the message on with lemon juice and let it dry.

You have to heat it up with a flame (hence a lighter) to get the message to appear, but there is an extremely fine line between the paper warming up enough to see the message and exploding into flames. I remember that we almost set the whole kitchen on fire. My mother was not pleased.

Try warming it up with an iron. Much safer.

Warm it by holding it near a lightbulb. Much more controllable.

And lemon juice works better than milk in my experience.

Well yeah, but there aren't any irons in my campaign world. Nor light bulbs, actually.
