I'm a bit irritated now, actually, though - I'd really like to join. Most of the Founding Fathers were members, and so was an ancestor of mine. (If you'd like to see him, pull out a $20 bill and look at the front. ) But the racial thing bugs me.....

I was really surprised to hear that, and wonder if it has more to do with being in the south than the Masons in general. Very sad and discouaging considering this is the 21st century, but not at all surprising. Maybe it was just an off comment by that particular jerk that isn't reflective of the Masons, but you might want to do a little research to find out if it is a widely held practice around the country.

Go with your heart and your gut instict on this one, Torm. I've always known you to be an up and up guy around here and know you'll do the right thing. You can always join us in Opus Dei if you still want to belong to a string pulling shadow conspiracy set on world domination.

There's a lot of merit in what you just said. As a Log Cabin (gay) Republican once told me, if you want to influence change, you have to be there. It's one of the reasons I stay in the Catholic church too.

I think they're a neat concept. I have seen many of the History Channel/National Geographic specials on them; the cat's out of the bag.

I've tried to get the guys to convert to the Dark Side, but they'd rather just sit around debating whether we should take the local orphans to a Mets game or a Yankees game this year.

Well ... to be honest I do believe in Secret Societies. I have known several people who were part of them on a "surface" level, that is, members of a lodge and such, and I know people who are (or were) initiated into the more "secret" levels and such. And I do believe they have influence in their surroundings, whether local or on larger levels, even to the level of countries, and have for some centuries now.

But even though I know they exist they really do not hold a lot of interest for me. I have known gazillions of people who are interested in these things and for whom it is a source of "excitement" to "hype up" their otherwise dull lives. (There are lots of other sorts interested in these things as well, of course, but we won't go into all that. )

So ultimately my stance on them is yes, they exist, and yes they have influence in our world. But my personal response to it all is non-existent.
