Poking around the Web I noted the following site which mentions in some detail the etymology of the word: Encyclopedia of Arda
So we are left to wonder whether Professor Tolkien dimly recalled a word he may have seen in his past studies. Or, perhaps more likely, it's a convergent word, drawing from the same roots.
