Do a Google search on "Kopi Luwak Coffee".

Don't eat beforehand or during your search. :)
It just goes to show that no matter how weird the ideas we come up with for fantasy games, the real world offers stuff that's far more bizarre! :D

But, no, I don't think I'll be trying to get a hold of any Kopi Luwak coffee!

"Kopi Luwak" is passed through the digestive track of a palm civit (a tree dwelling animal similar to a monkey), not a weasel.
Yes, but monkeys aren't available as familiars. Sometimes you just have to improvise. :D

Thanks for the answers, folks! To be honest, this thread generated about 10 more responses than I thought it would (not that you guys aren't great about responding, it just wasn't that 'hot' a topic... maybe if I'd titled it something like '3.5 Caffeine Got Nerfed!') ;)

Of course, I also didn't anticipate the Kopi Luwak thing.

So, based on what you've all said, I think a safe assumption is that I could probably make a pound of beans last about ten days on average - my PC is more of a "likes to drink coffee" type, not a "needs to drink coffee" type, and she's willing to share (as long as she gets the first cup, of course). So, maybe I'll only make coffee every other morning for a while.

There's a Percolator in the A&EG? (Is it magical or something?) I think a "french press" type pot would be more in order for an adventuring type who's always on the go.

There is, and it's mundane equipment. I imagine it's just an iron jug that you throw water and grounds into and set on top of the fire, like something you'd take camping. I suppose it could be like a french press, though; the book doesn't really comment on the mechanics of it (other than to say a full pot does 1d3 heat damage when thrown).

i'm glad this isn't related to the real world. (coffee didn't originate in the NEw World btw)

i thought they imported the beans to Amn in the FR. where are you basing your character?

It says in the FRCS that coffee originates in Maztica (as does vanilla), and is likely imported to Amn since they're the only ones from Faerun with a major presence over there. My character was born and raised in Sembia to a wealthy merchant family; given how important trade is to both countries, I can imagine my PC being exposed to coffee at some point and developing a taste for it. But obtaining it is a different story; I'm guessing that if we ever get back to a real city, I'll have to stock up.

Page 18 of Salt and Sea Dogs: The Pirates of Tellene:

Monkey familiars give a +3 to balance checks.

Salt and Sea Dogs is an official DnD suppliment, not d20.

If d20 suffices:

Page 152 of the Player's Guide to Bards, Wizards, and Sorcerers:

Monkey familiars give a +3 to climb checks.

That's a Scarred Lands d20 suppliment.

(both book are good buys by the way.)

Anyway, I make about 1 latte every other day on average, or perhaps 2 lattes every 3 days... A pound of espresso beans lasts me maybe 3 weeks.

Things to consider: once the beans are no longer vacuum sealed after being roasted they will rapidly lose their flavor. If a person is willing to spend 50gp on a pound quality is going to matter. The solution is to roast them just prior to usage, which is not practical on the road.

Unsealed beans will lose their oils rapidly, and will pick up a stale taste in short order. People used to grocery store brand beans might now notice until they get used to fresh roast, at which the difference is like eating in a school cafeteria versus eating at a 1000 a plate restaurant. :D

Now there's an image: a Wizard with a caffeine-hooked weasel familiar dancing around in his robes*! :)

*this has actually nearly come up in a game of Ars Magica; read from that what you will!

Now that sounds like a great AM saga!

We had a Bjornaer otter who was trying to become a saint, but sans caffiene ;)

Civets are neither weasels nor monkeys. They are closest to mongooses. So weasel is closer.

Anyway... a coffee dependent character sounds like a great hook. I'd say that the pound would last between 1 to 3 weeks, depending on how much coffee the character drinks.

Demiurge out.

ah coffee.

yes coffee.

some things to consider. How well are you going to be able to grind your coffee.

If your using a French Press affair, then all you need is course ground. The scale goes finer and finer until you reach espresso, which is the finest grind most people use.

There are many varieties of Indian double boiler contraptions that are very small and portable. Visit some independent coffee houses and they'll probably have them for decoration.

Teas would be much more viable, they are just as or more exotic and easier to get a hold of, in most case and regrow in your region.

I takes years before a coffee beans matures into a plant/tree that produces beans for harvest.

At that coffee shop ask to see their teas. Theres Dragon Pearl tea, thats little balls of leaves that are rolled up. Usually by monks or something that make the teas. Their are all sorts of crazy things like that. Go out and find them.

have fun!

The weasel does dance around in his master's robes. This poor guy had a fairly quiet and docile weasel familiar until the player who runs his familiar saw a documentary on weasels. Well, after seeing what little berserkers they can be, his familiar... changed. We feel very sorry for him; the Order of Hermes' leading expert on familiars has a familiar that most people would cheerfully strangle! :D

According to Aurora's Whole Realms Catalogue, coffee has been grown in the Shaar for years. I think that you've been had and are paying through the nose for foreign coffee.

I don't have my Aurora's Catalogue on me, so could someone check to see how much she charges for coffee?
