Sell me on a setting

Looking into a slightly different, yet still recognizably D&D setting to use as an "off night" setting, or a second, or even third campaign so we can get a good rotation going. I'm kinda torn between Ghostwalk and Forgotten Realms of the Unapproachable East variety, which seems quite different from "standard" FR of the Silver Marches, etc. variety. At least, I'd like to use those as baselines and maybe mix in some other stuff (other Manual of the Planes stuff added to Ghostwalk for instance, or Oriental Adventures stuff added to Unapproachable East). Any comments from the peanut gallery? Here's your chance to let me know what I need to know about those two settings. No reviews of Ghostwalk here or at rpg.net, and not a whole lot on Unapproachable East either, although there are a few reviews I've looked at, at least.

Ghostwalk will make you more attractive to women, live longer, and be successful in everything you accomplish.

Plut its pretty cool as far as different settings go.

;)

Midnight is a fun setting that takes two steps away from Drizzt and two big steps towards Aragorn (my way of saying that it embraces Tolkienish roots).

The changes to the casting, magic item and overall magic system are fantastic, adding to the setting's ambience. The new classes are well done and add to the world immensely, making it distinctly its own.

The players have to fight for hope and in a world so rocked by evil you can bet there are no over-powered NPC's overshadow them or to do the work for them.

Check it out.

Well, there is always warcraft? It is coming out on the 28th, at least that is what the release chart says. It is D&D compatible, but not quite D&D. I am just waiting fer some more info to show up, or a review would be even better.

Hey if you play in the Unaproachable East, run that Screaming Hag on 'em and a couple hag spawn as body guards. I dang near wiped my party out with her.

So cool.

You should look at Oathbound. The diversity in the types of characters, the assumed high level of play, and all the politicking that goes on makes it an interesting, diverse, and deadly setting.

In addition to that, Midnight really is well crafted.

Well, I really like UE. Its probably the best they've done yet. I like the layout better than the Marches and the content is great. I was able to pull a lot of over to a Kalamar campaign I have running.

Another vote for Forgotten Realms here. An Oriental Adventures inspired Unapproachable East game could be a lot of fun.

Then again, why not go the whole nine yards and set a game in Kara-Tur? The Shou-Expatriate region from UE should be enough to get ya started, and straight OA easily falls into the "slightly different, but still recognizable" category you're looking for... :)

I'd like to chip in my two cents regarding Midnight. I know Johsua is a Tolkien fan, so that might make Midnight attractive to him. Midnight is very much like what Middle-earth might have been like had Sauron recovered the One Ring. It's not exactly like Middle-earth, of course, but you'll find familiar themes and tropes within it.

Midnight might be a good setting in which to play for those Tolkien fans who don't like the thought of messing around with the actual Middle-earth setting. I know that it's tempting me, and I don't mind gaming in Tolkien's world itself. The point being that Midnight is a good setting in and of itself.

Remember the various "alternate worlds" the adventuring party could go to in Queen of the Demonweb Pits? Midnight strikes me as being like one of those, especially the one where the party shows up just as the last Dwarven kingdom is under heavy attack by the forces of darkness.
