Semi-Vancian Divine Magic

Definite dig on the cleric. Also like how turn undead does not seem to be affected by charisma. Anything that makes a class less MAD is a plus in my book.

Frankly, I really wish all Vancian classes were like this. Memorize your spells, then cast them however you want.

Which is to say, I'd love to be able to memorize fireball and fly, then do two fireballs, two flys, or one of each.

I want to say this is how Arcana Unearthed works, actually. Regardless, it makes wizards easier to play and lets me not wince whenever someone says "memorizing spells."

Cheers!

Am I reading this wrong?

Has this been done before in 4e or Pathfinder?

Otherwise, how come there are so few comments on the currently proposed mechanics for casting Cleric spells?

It seems to me that it heavily changes both the tactical and strategic scope of clerics...

Well, Pathfinder does have "free" orisons, but you still have to spend higher level spells. It also has channeling instead of turning, but it works a bit differently.

I could get on board with this, though on the other hand I like having wizards and clerics feel different, mechanically.

Incidentally, this is very similar to some of the alternate spell systems presented in Players Option: Spells & Magic.

I agree though that comparing it to the sorcerer in 3e makes more sense.

It doesn't make sence if the cleric will have the wizard's way of casting spells, it is also weird if they are like the sorcerer's known spells.

The current suggested cleric way of casting spell is right and cool. In narrative form,

The cleric prays to his god that he wants to have Cure light wounds, Hold Person, and Arc Lightning for the day. His god will grant him that spells. But unlike the wizard who must prepare each spell separately, the cleric only has the available spells for the day and is a bit more flexible than the wizard.

not sure if narrated it right

I think the cleric mechanic is more conected to his god, think about it as spheres, each god can give a small specific number of spells that the cleric can channel, I think it's a neat idea.

Couple that with some sort of divine ritual casting for the spells your deity can grant in it sphere and it's very cool.

Also, making Turn undead into a spell suggest a bunch of interesting things about the basic cleric abilities, what if your god could let you channel other spells with your channel divinity instead of Turn undead.
