First, I would make the shudders out of some cheap scrap iron with immpurities. That way they would also deflect arrows. The shuuders don't have to be made of real sturdy stuff since the spell immediately detontates upon impact of ANYTHING. Heck, they could be made of balsa wood for all I care.

If the fireball destroys the interposing barrier, it continues on through the opening, if large enough. I don't think an arrow slit is large enough to allow this, but its something you should consider.

Give a supporting guard one of these...

Ring of Force Shield

An iron band, this simple ring generates a large shield-sized (and shield-shaped) wall of force that stays with the ring and can be wielded by the wearer as if it were a normal shield (+2 AC). This special creation, since it can be activated and deactivated at will (a free action), has no armor check penalty or arcane spell failure chance.

A large shield (which is effectively a wall of force) should be big enough to cover a tiny opening.

I agree that it might continue on past the portal. So, then use highly tempered shutters to displace any unwanted fireballs coming in to your guard room through the arrow slit.

I like the idea of the force ring, but it would possibly be exessively priced for every guard to have one.

Like iron? That should definately be able to take a couple fireballs, maybe even more. If the shudder is an inch thick steel plate, it will have a hardness of 10 and 30 hit points. A maximized 7th level fireball would take it out in one shot, but barring maximize spell, only a 7th to 10th level fireball would have a chance of doing it in one shot. Should work pretty well.

I agree with the shudder idea, but kreynolds what do you think of the ring?

At 8,500gp a pop, that's really expensive (unless you only have a total of half a dozen or so arrow slits to worry about). If you have the resources to buy that many rings after building your stronghold and hiring your guards, more power to you.

Well, if you had the resources to afford that much stuff you really shouldn't be worring about the stuff coming through the arrow slits. What about those really big nasty dudes that epic level people talk about?

I don't know?!

I was just trying to think of something, and nothing was coming to mind, but I had to put something.

Sorry for wasting your time.

Will try again later.
