Sentient gem from outer space

David Drake and Eric Flint had a very good alternate history series (the Belisarius novels) where there was a sentient crystal that was sent back in time as part of a time war that sought to shape the outcome of mankind. Both the crystal (named AIDE) and it's opposite number LINK, introduced advanced (well for the Roman Era) in an effort to give their respective sides the advantage. AIDE was influenced by the humans it came into contact in shaping it's personality. But LINK basically forced it's personality on specially prepared people.

Know what else is the size of a fist? A heart.

Perhaps it's the heart of a Celestial, frozen into crystal in an epic battle with Things from the outer darkness (which explains its falling from such a location); perhaps frozen in battle with creatures from Dream (which would explain its inability to communicate consciously).

Perhaps it heralds the coming of whatever killed it. :uhoh:

Ok, I'm pained that this hasn't been stated yet:

A shadow shall fall over the universe, and evil will grow in its path, and death will come from the skies.

Well you beat me to it....I would certainly HOPE folks get the reference...

Indeed, I too am beaten to the Loc-Nar!

Actually my first thought was of an NPC in one of my old D&D campaigns who found a similar glowing, talking gem that fused to his hand. The end result was a medieval parody of Lensman or Green Lantern.

Not long after I ran a slightly modified version of the same adventure using the 1st Ed. relic 'The Ring of Gaxx'. The ring not only spoke to the weilder but informed him that he was one of many Gaxx (one for each plane of existance), resulting in a Green Lantern Corps type organization. I was particularly found of using the Happy Hunting Grounds Gaxx as an NPC. His personality resembled a more spiritual Kilowogg (for those familiar with Green Lantern) and he looked like a Native American Minotaur. Think of the Tauren from World of Warcraft. Over the course a several months worth of adventures I introduced the entire JLA...er...I mean, Justice Guild of Greyhawk! LOL

Hey, I was 14, cut me some slack. ;)

It is an alien consciousness (either from the stars, or from another plane) come to earth for an unknown purpose, and it has adopted the PCs as its arms and legs in this world. It is so foreign that it finds it hard to communicate with the PCs, and does so with cryptic sentences, like prophesies. It remains silent for most of the campaign, but every once and a while (when you need a random adventure hook) it pipes up with a cryptic request, like, "Go to the cavern with the blue walls and knock thrice on the green door," which you can turn into an adventure.

You don't ever need to determine why the gem wants them to do these things. Let the players try to puzzle it out. If they come up with something you like, go with it, otherwise it can forever remain the cryptic alien gem that is beyond human understanding.
