Actually, the RPG says that it takes place in a small cluster of solor systems, which makes more sense to me.

Ah, no. Single mega-system. Multiple suns, multiple planets and moons. It's explicit about that.

Never apply logic (or science) to a sci-fi show/movie. It just doesn't mix.

That said, maybe the whole backstory (about Earth) is not true. Maybe it's like "The Village" in space, a large group of people decided to move to another to make their own sort of utopia , then they either told scare stories about the outside, or altered history to make it seem plausible.
