Serenity/Firefly RPG - Anyone played it?

I wouldn't mind playing it. I loved Firefly. Serenity needed some work but was good.

What system would you run it with? Was there something about the existing system you didn't like?

Heh, my answer would be Spycraft 2.0! I never really got into Stargate SG1 as a show, but I liked how they did the game with the Spycraft system.

I've got the book and had the opportunity to play a one shot at a convention. Unfortunately, the only other person in the group who had the book was the GM, and no one (including the GM) was well-versed with the rules (I had perused them). It made play a bit clunky and combat moved very slowly, but I think it would have been better had we been more familiar with what we were doing. I also had trouble navagating some the rules sections of the book, and figuring out things like how dodging and hitting people in combat worked, exactly.

I think I'd rather run it as a d20 modern or a d10 (Eden studios) system - in fact, I think Eden put out some suppliment rules for a Firefly-esque campaign in one of their magazines. However, it's more because those systems are what I'm familiar/comfortable with.

I haven't seen the actual Serenity RPG, but if I ran it I'd use Alternity, with an adapted version of the character generation system from Traveller: The New Era (basically, you take your character from the age of 17 and forward in steps of 4 years, and the career you take during those four years decide what skills and stuff you get).

Seems like people don't entirely mind the system but would think of something they've played more to fit better, perhaps out of familiarity?

I've never played Traveler or most of the other non-d20 systems mentioned, but I've played Starwars d20 and d20 Modern and those could work with the right background setup. But from what I've seen of the book they seem to push the feel of the game a great deal, it even has an appendix with slang used in the setting (something I think all setting specific stuff should do).

I'm definately looking to pick it up.

Any specific gripes about the system?

Feel the need to defend Serenity here.

I love the game. It is simple, fast and rules light. You could easily use Star Wars, Spycraft, and probably Traveler would work (Never played that). It all has to do with the Firefly verse, no aliens, and no FTL. Taking a week or more traveling between the planets.

I have a PbP game with it that been going strong for since September. I like I can do combat, almost any skill check with out going to the rule book. For NPC's I don't even need the book. Takes like 10 minutes to build, equip and flesh out a character and thats not having the book at all.

I think it is a very nice game, the rule book is set up a little wonky and there are a few errors and ommisions but I still like. Would be a nice game for a newer DM or if you want a little change of pace for a bit with out getting into system with a lot of rules.

I would also use the Alternity system to run a Serenity/Firefly game.

This is for two reasons.

One, I don't like the system used in the book. It feels . . . wonky, for lack of anything else. I also don't like that even when an attribute is rated high, it can still roll as poorly as someone who has a low attribute. Sure, they could roll higher and their average roll is better, but as we all know, sometimes things hang on that one roll.

Two, I prefer Alternity. I am much more familiar with it and I think it would be fun. Further, I use Drama Points, from Eden, instead of LRPs, which I think would help to create that Firefly-esque game. Maybe I missed it but I didn't see anything like that in the game.

Absolutely love the game. I'm currently running a campaign, every other week (with regular session summaries on my Livejournal), and it's the best gaming experience that I've had in years. (Mostly due to the fact that I've got a group of players who are all huge Firefly fans, and excellent role-players as well.)

The rules do a good job of supporting the feel of the show. My only complaint is the organization of the rulebook. Stuff is spread out everywhere, and there's no index. Makes a cheat sheet really neccessary.
