Thanks for the comments

I wonder with all the other books included how many verbal only spells there really are?

Personally, I stick to stuff in the SRD or available online. I don't necessarily trust the power balance of the non-core stuff, and more importantly, I hate it when you are forced to go out and buy books you don't have.

Anyhow, thanks for everyone for the great comments!

The power balance of non core stuff is realy not as much of a problem as people thing. It is more abusible, but most of the time you have to set out to abuse it. As long as the players don't have that mind set it is fine. Also, no ones forcing anyone to do anything.

Surely you trust Monte Cook to balance his books with the rest of D&D...

AND they are available as cheap PDFs.

Well, I understand that since 90+% of the Unearthed Arcana, say, is OGL content, so there is no problem treating it like the SRD. BoredFlak at d20srd.com is putting the UA online like the SRD, and I'm looking forward to that.

But I guess what it comes down to is that I look to the SRD as "canon," and like to stick to baseline.

Also, I think I can speak with authority only on rules I have used in play: in the campaign I'm in, splat books are not allowed.

No insult intended AT ALL to those who use them! More power to ya!
