Servants of the Fey Queen of Nightmares

Not particularly powerful, and would have to be conversed from earlier ed, but... Campestri ftw! Damn wacky shrooms... Speaking of sentient molds: Vegepygmy (vegepigmeys?) p.273

And maybe some Tengu NPC's (p. 263)?

Doppelgangers (p. 89) could fill in in roles of lost relatives, NPC's they failed to rescue, villains they backstabbed etc.

As a nice touch - how about a Hypnotoad? Nerf the Froghemoth (p. 136) AC and attack, take away his tentacles attack and all-around vision, add daze/hypnotism/charm person/hold person/hypnotic pattern as spell like abilities and voila!

Very soon, my PCs will be requested by the Queen of the Faeries to aid her against an old adversary: The Queen of Nightmares has devised a way to control all mortal dreams (both good and bad) and plans to use it to rule the world of the fey (where dreams come from), the world of shadow (where nightmares come from) and the world between (where mortals dwell when they do not sleep).

Now, what sort of creatures should the Queen of Nightmare's employ as her servants, lackeys, and minions?

A few no brainers stick out; night hags, nightmares, shadows, etc all strike me as obvious, as do evil fey (though beyond redcaps, anyone know of any in D&D?) I'm looking for other monsters that would fit thematically with a "dark fairy tale/stuff of nightmares" theme.

If it helps, the PCs will be around 8th-9th level, Pathfinder/3.5.

Let the storm of brains begin!

Since she's invading mortal dreams, anything regarding the Dreamlands various incarnations would be fair game, both for source material and co-plots.

IRC Eberron had a race native to the Dreamplane who could either be minions, recruits, and likely unlikely allies opposing her invasion of THEIR realm. i think the Fiendish Codex (I or II?) likewise had a incorporeal fiendish clan which would also have something to say about her plans.

Of course any plot-hooks regarding the Silver Key, Leng, and Kadath would obviously fill your desire to send fear-laden shivers down the spine of any player recognizing the connections to HPL's Dreamlands and the resulting implications ... esp if you toss in a passing Illithiad encounter.

The Faire Queen of Nightmares may instigate the attempt, but defeating her may/may not ultimately protect the mortal realms from the forces arrayed against it.

Just remembered the fyhir (in MMII, iirc? aka feyir in older editions), a betentacled aberrant creature that shuns daylight, a creature born of the collected fears of a population. That seems like a suitable agent for a queen of nightmares.

I'm not personally fond of it, but the 2E Nightmare Lands for Ravenloft may have subject matter you could use.

Also, worms-that-walk (though seriously deleveled) may be appropriate, as well as maggot golems. Neothelids and mind flayers could fit in as well (see Speaker in Dreams from 3E).
