Inspired by this thread: http://enworld.cyberstreet.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=40459 where people are discussing the similar nature/effects of the various 3E "supernatural powers", I thought I'd solicit your opinion regarding your handling of Psionics in your 3e game.

Do you use the recommended procedure for setting save DC's ( roll a d20 + level of power+ relevant ability modifier of the manifester), or use the variant (DC 10+, level of power+ relevant ability modifier of the manifester - basically the same as spells) ?

I'm in two games now, one a GM, and one a player. In the latter, my PC is picking up a level of PsiWarrior, and this will be the first Psionics in this campaign. I think rolling the d20 sounds like fun. Or is it just the munckin in me that wants to have access to high DC's at low levels?

edit: spelling - me no spel gud Stil! &:

Yes, there is no option for not liking /never ever planning on using psionics. I understand some of you feel that way. Keep on truckin' yo!

We haven't really gotten around to psionics in my group, but we'd probably use the flat DC of 10. Just makes everything so much simpler that way, I think.

I like the d20 roll. Yeah, you can fail but when you have ONE PP left, roll that 20 and Charm that evil Archmage, well thats the kind of moment that groups talk about for years to come. That moment is what a DM is supposed to craft, IMO, and the roll helps.

We use the d20 right now, but are considering switching to the flat 10.

The d20 has provided for some extreme luck. Important dismissals that suck, and DC 28 Mind Blasts...

Random DCs

The last campaign I ran had a PC psion, and randomly rolling the base DC for his powers worked against him more often than it worked in his favor.

So, as a player I'm against it. As a GM, I'm for it.

Seriously, though, the random element makes things interesting, but I think it hinders players more than critters. And I'm not sure that's a good thing. But...the player of the above mentioned psion has no problem with the system.

Go figrue.

Random factors tend to benefit the critters than PCs.

A player character has to roll alot more often than pretty much any NPC/critter will have to, and is more likly to experience the extremes than the critter would. Yea, the 15 to 20 range is nice for a PC trying to smack something around with DC range. The 1 to 5 is about as likly and hurts.

I use the roll. Though I think I'd allow a +0 metapsionic feat to normalize the DC, if any of my players was ever interested (stabalize power).

IMC we're using the varient method. My feelings are that psion's get gimped enough with some of their powers, no sense doing it with thier DC's as well. After all, since they have to roll more often then I do it really does work against them more often then I'd care it to.
