Setting 'Nightfang Spire' in Greyhawk

Shadowdancer

First Post
I'm getting ready to run "Heart of Nightfang Spire" in a campaign taking place in the Greyhawk setting. Anyone have any suggestions for a good place to locate the adventure? The closer to the City of Greyhawk, the better.

Thanks.

Probably the best choice, IMO, is in the Rift Barrens, near the Rift Canyon, just based on the geography of the map in the module.

But for locations near enough to Greyhawk, IMO, the Cairn Hills or the Abbor-Alz are quite fine. Three locations seem to stand out to me, either deep in the peninsula that juts into the Nyr Dyv, or where the Cairn Hills and the Abbor-Alz come together, or on the Bright Desert side of the Abbor-Alz.

[edit: First, a message for the two of my players that read this board from time to time] Hey! Ron, Rob! Get out of this thread, eh? :)

How about in the western half of the map? The PCs are based in Sterich (though they spend a lot of time in Keoland and Ulek). I was thinking somewhere around the Yatil Mountains, or possibly the Barrier Peaks. Any ideas?

Indeed, putting the adventure near a spot where the party can get high level reinforcements to replace fallen members, like Greyhawk City, is a very good idea. :)

In addition to the suggestions above, you might consider placing the Spire on an isolated island within the Nyr Dyv (perhaps rumors abound that it's a resurfaced Isle of Woe?), Wooly Bay, and/or along the Bright Desert coastline, south of Hardby.

Other ideas:

  • hide it in an isolated glen in the the Gnarley Forest, perhaps near the infamous Blackthorn caves
  • place it on an patch of dry-ish ground in the Mistmarsh, and make it a leaning spire
  • jumping off of Eric's idea, perhaps invert the tower as a cairn within the Cairn Hills
  • stick it in the Bright Desert, as a ruin that Rary and cohorts are about to explore/exploit, so that the PCs have to beat the clock against a group of rival NPCs sponsored by Rary and Robilar
  • place it near Maure Castle, which is already a strange and deadly locale filled with strange Suel ruins
  • set the tower within the hinterlands of Dyvers or Urnst territory, so that if Greyhawk-based PCs are caught exploring it they may cause a diplomatic incident of some sort
