Setting up camp in hell.

Not really hell, but close to it.

IMC, the PCs are going to need to set up camp in a very hostile area. If you are familiar with Eberron, the enviroment is like something out of the Mournlands.

They are going to be on a relativly flat plan, but instead of grass, the area will be rock. The place is hostile, and not likely to sport much in the way of humanoids or significantly intelligent life.

So I need an encounter to spring on them while camping. Any suggestions?

Burrowing or flying creatures. A burrowing creature can be lurking just below the ground and imperciptible, a flying creature at night can remain outside the range of darkvision and swiftly move in and out of range to engage.
What level are they?
Depending on Lvl I'd suggest: Bulettes, Dire Bats, Delvers, Earth Elementals or Thoqqua, Formians are good you can pull a They Live routine with the hive underground and them coming up through tunnels,
Grabboids ala Tremors (give a Giant Octopuss or Kraken the earthglide ability)
Psuedo-Dragon mob.

Grabboids!

Ha! I love that movie.

How about a "wandering traveler," who just happens to be a disguised demon bound to an artifact buried somewhere in the region. The demon comes upon hapless travelers, sitting with them at night, sharing stories (probably ones he's heard other travelers tell--before he ate them of course) and gaining trust, until the group is asleep, at which point he attempts to slay them, or maybe drag one off....

How about desperately looking for food and fresh water?

None. It's a GURPS game, so don't let levels, classes or other "D&Disms" cripple a good suggestion. :)

Angry Sand. An amorphous oozelike monster made of sand that moves through the gaps in the stone. It waits until characters have made camp and slowly pushes itself up through the rocks to engulf them without waking them. It's attack is some form of dehydration as it sucks the water out of the PCs to sustain its own fluidity.
