Top SF Characters Ranked
From SciFi wire....

SFX magazine has published a list of the top 10 science-fiction characters of all time, as determined by a poll of readers. The results of the poll include four characters from UPN's Buffy the Vampire Slayer, two from the SCI FI Channel's Farscape and two from Star Wars. The number one spot went to British SF legend Doctor Who.

The complete top 10 list follows:

1. Doctor Who (Doctor Who)
2. Spike (Buffy the Vampire Slayer)
3. Buffy Summers (Buffy the Vampire Slayer)
4. John Crichton (Farscape)
5. Aeryn Sun (Farscape)
6. Han Solo (the Star Wars saga)
7. Willow Rosenberg (Buffy the Vampire Slayer)
8. Darth Vader (the Star Wars saga)
9. Angel (Buffy the Vampire Slayer)
10. Gandalf (Lord of the Rings)

---------------------------

some I can see but where are all the greats - broken poll if I every saw one! Where is James T. Kirk, Tarzan, Bilbo, and all the others!

No...

...Spock, Khan, Paul Atreides, Buck Rogers, Flash Gordon, Horselover Fat, G'Kar, Londo, Garibaldi, Crais, Scorpius, Valantine Michael Smith, Lord Valentine, Thomas Covenant, Cheradenine Zakalwe, Severian, Mallory Ringess, Bardo {a personal favorite}, Louis Gridley Wu....arrgghh...

OK, so the list is kaput.

What are our favorites around here?

I like both Buffy and Farscape, but that poll is ridiculous.

Dr. Who I'm not suprised by (though I don't agree), since the poll was British.

THE SciFi character of all time is obviously James T. Kirk, anyway. Do not go to Britain, for it is a silly place.

Okay, so this was obviously a popularity contest, and if it was British, that explains why Spike would beat Buffy, Angel, and Willow.

I think Spike is seriously lacking in something, though. The character isn't there for any good (IMHO) reason. He was better as a bad guy (and he reminds me of Marvel's attempts to turn bad guys like Venom and Sabretooth into anti-heroes).

What the heck is he doing? He hangs out with Buffy. This is pretty sad, because any great character needs to have strong motivations. Why does he hang out with her? Because he fell in love with her. Sorry, I just don't buy it. A soulless (at the time) vampire falling in love with a Slayer. He's become a second-rate Angel.

Don't get me wrong; I like Spike. James Marsters (I always confuse that name with James Marsden, Cyclops) is a fine addition to the cast. But the only thing the character has going for him is fluff. He looks cool, he acts tough, he's got some great lines, and the acting is well-delivered. But at a deeper level, I see nothing in this character other than a two-bit vampire who doesn't seem to really know what he's doing. Buffy and Angel are far more compelling characters.

I've never watched buffy. I don't consider it sci-fi, but neither is LoTR. Buffy is fantasy/ horror, but not sci fi. There should have been at least one Babylon 5 character on the list.

Well, the fact that it's only a Top 10 pretty much guarantees that half of your list would be missing, whoeever they picked.

Well I say, that is I say son, I was speaking hyperbolically.

The Buffy-centricity of the list surprised me. I figured there would be a greater spread of responses. That's all I was getting at.
