[Shackled City]Where on Earth(precisely) is Cauldron

Psion

Adventurer
Hey all,

I was considering running the Shackled City adventure path. But in wondering where to put it, I was given to wonder what world I would run it in. One of my standbys for running published adventures in is Second World, which uses Earth's topography.

Okay, so can any geographical whizzes out there tell me where on Earth (capital E, as in the world we live on) I can find a convenient crater the size of the one that houses Cauldron? Crater Lake in Oregon is the first place I considered, but it seems too big not to mention in the second world political scene it's a bit out of the way (though I have run a game in the region of Mt. Ranier before...)

Most crater lakes that are widely known are larger than the Cauldron one. Additionally, they usually have not very steep slopes. There are lots of crater lakes in New Zealand, but that's not exactly a geopolitical center, either. In Europe, Lago Albano near Rome or Laacher See near Cologne come to mind. They are a bit large, but both have other volcanic lakes nearby. The volcanos have been long dormant, though. Long as in 'very long' :).

Edit: Lago di Nemi might be even better than Lago Albano.

Italy, eh?

Hmmm. Not bad. I was considering putting Parma there as sort of a fantasy Venice.

Whereabouts in Italy is this? (Will try to map it myself, but in case I strike out and you happen to know...)

New Zealand isn't bad, because it's easy to get PCs there, and it's not "spoken for" in terms of what is going on in second world (though Australia is a scary place in 2W, which isn't a bad thing.)

Edit: And I found it... Southeast of Rome.

Hmmm... I wonder what second world Rome is like...

Cauldron is in a semi-tropical region. There are some jungles nearby and it rains a lot. New Zealand seems like a good choice, as would Hawaii. It could probably fit in fairly well somewhere in South America as well.

The last part of your sentence doesn't match the first part. New Zealand is not a semi-tropical region, nor is it particularly close to any (unless you count northern Queensland as "close"). I think NZ has rainforests, but that's not the same as "tropical".

Indeed Wellington is the world's southermost capital at a latitude of close to 41 degrees. So for some perspective, it's about as far south from the tropics as Chicago is north (or Barcelona for a European reference point).
