Shadowrun War! "Arbeit Macht Frei!"

The review Dannyalcatraz refers to (which was originally posted here (scroll down)) is by the same reviewer who also tore the book apart on Paizo. Just saying, because ruemere's right. Unless someone confirms this, it's speculation (note that the review on Paizo seems to have been met with suspicion, as it was apparently published before the book was even out). If it should turn out that the allegations are correct, it's a disgusting move by the publisher.

Basically there's a column or so on how horribly haunted and dangerous Shadowrun-Auschwitz is, and there's a short adventure suggestion/plot hook that has basically no detail at all regarding plot, enemies, location layout etc, and boils down to the PCs going into Auschwitz to recover the scalpel of a Mengele-type Nazi doctor which has become imbued with power and haunted by its victims.
Ugh. This doesn't fill me with happiness and joy.

FWIW, the book's been out on PDF since the 13th. The review on Paizo was put-up on the 19th, after the PDF went on sale.

This whole thing upsets me. If it's such a small part of the book, they could have taken it out without a problem. Why put in something so emotionally charged and give it so little time and attention?

If someone really wanted to treat a WWII concentration camp as a potential adventure site (not something I recommend, but if you are going to do it) there have to be better ways of doing it .

The section in question can be copied/pasted in full since this is a thread reviewing this product and "fair use" allows copying material for purposes of review. Not the full book, but sections in question can be.

So I think it would be important for people to be able to see and judge for themselves just how tasteful or tasteless the section in question actually is.

Thanks for the clarification Treebore.

This is the entirety of the relevant section of the book. It's in the Poland section of the 'Global Hotspots' chapter, and while there a couple of other plot hooks in that section, none are Holocaust-related in any way.

Typoes are probably mine.

WORK BRINGS FREEDOM

Oswiecim was under a spiritual barrier for a number of years. Oswiecim was home to Auschwitz-Birkenau, the most well known of the Nazi party’s concentration camps. During the Holocaust, 1.1 million people died within its walls. This led it to become one of the most haunted places on the planet. Ghosts of all shapes and sizes dwelled within, frightening out or murdering all residents of Oswiecim. Because of the sheer magnitude of the haunting, a great number of other things found home there.

For the inclined occult investigator, Auschwitz-Birkenau is a treasure trove. It’s also a remarkably dangerous trap. Earlier this year, an entrepreneur named Tetsuo Shuumatsu hired a cabal of sorcerers, charging them with the removal of the barrier. He’s an arms dealer, one who specializes in the weapons necessary to take down ghosts. With such an infestation of ghosts, only a silly buyer would hesitate to pay top dollar for his wares. His greed opened this treasure trove to the public, allowing those without a sense of self-preservation to have a unique opportunity to drudge for necromantic artifacts.

The town proper is effectively still a town, albeit a town inhabited by the angry and hungry dead. They don’t take kindly to the living, but aren’t necessarily hostile unless provoked. Many are simply living out echoes of their past existences as harmless villagers. The real problem comes from the concentration camps proper. The three main campuses are surrounded by about fifty smaller camps. Each of the smaller camps is a hotbed of supernatural activity, but nothing compared to the magnitude of the central collective.

In particular, Auschwitz II is remarkable. It was the source of the vast majority of deaths—it’s what most people think of when referencing Auschwitz. It’s nightmare made flesh, almost a living organism unto itself. The halls audibly scream and cry, the ghosts beg for release so much that most people couldn’t even hear themselves speak. For your average runner, Auschwitz II is suicide. Only the most enterprising groups will survive the trip. But such a trip can result in great rewards (see The Fleshfinder, below).

THE FLESHFINDER

Deep within the bowels of Auschwitz II during WWII, Dr. Eduard Wirths conducted and supervised thousands of odd experiments on the human body. He tested mustard gas on innocents. He mutilated twins. He held people in tanks of ice water for hours or until dead. He exposed prisoners to malaria. He forced them to drink seawater. One particular implement from his experiments, a rusted old scalpel, was left in the labs. Over many years, it was energized by the various ghosts passing by it, feeding off their death energies. At this point, it’s taken on a life of its own.

The rusty old scalpel craves death. It only finds itself at home when flush with warm blood. Although this makes it a remarkably effective weapon, anyone holding it is subject to the sounds of its past victims. As a function of this, when the weapon is in hand, the character is considered distracted and suffers a –4 dice pool modifier to all Perception Tests. If she attempts to Observe in Detail as a Simple Action, she only suffers a –2 dice pool modifier.

(imho)

The last three paragraphs should be stricken out.
I do not mind writers mining history for material, I would prefer them to avoid depicting great tragedies in terms of possible gain.

For better treatment of this sensitive topic, you may want to check Charnel Houses of Europe: The Shoah by White Wolf Game Studio.

I don't know, it seems to be tastefully written to me. They don't glorify it, they call it the nightmare it was, and clearly paint the events as evil and only those of evil mind would even mess with the place.

I would be offended if they sounded like they were trying to minimize it or glorify it, this seems about as tastefully handled as it can be within the context it is presented.

Plus through the Fleshfinder write up they are in effect spreading awareness of actual horrible things that were done and hopefully will make more people who slept through their history classes aware of just how horrible these events were.

I certainly don't think the subject should be taboo, that just helps keep it out of the minds of the general populace, which is exactly where it needs to be kept if we can hope to prevent such events from being repeated.

In fact I have seen people point out Darfur (sp?) as an example of how we, as a world, have already failed on a similar front.

So I am sure people can and will be offended by this, which is their right, but I think it conveys the right image of the events, as being a horrific nightmare perpetrated by monstrous humans who are/were insidiously evil.

#1) IME, Europeans are a LOT touchier about Nazis than we are, so the reviewer probably had a more visceral reaction.

#2) It still doesn't change the fact that the supernatural threat to PCs are going to be the unquiet dead of the Jews who died in the Holocaust.

#3) The idea implied isn't to put those spirits to rest by destroying the last vestiges of Nazi supernatural power but to get past the Jewish spirits to GET KEWL GEAR! IOW, it's not about righting a wrong and letting spirits achieve peace, it's about steamrolling them in an attempt to increase personal power, IMHO compounding the abuses they suffered in life.

Quoted for truth.

If the adventure seed would have been written as basically "kill the Nazi undead/sorcerers/evil artifact to free the Jewish ghosts from their agony", I wouldn't be offended even in the slightest way. But destroying the ghosts of innocent Jewish Holocaust victims to get a magic item is offensive.

Maybe they should've just changed the last paragraph to destroying that accursed Fleshfinder to release the victims' spirits from their constant agony. Now THAT have been A LOT more acceptable.

I don't think the idea is presented as the adventure idea for us to use as is for our players. I think it is the scenario in place for SR GM's to decide how to go about foiling using heroic PC's.

Now I am sure there are groups out there who play evil type characters, so who knows where it will go on an individual group basis.

War!

I stand by my assessment.

The morally questionable adventure path is not overt, it is implied.
