I guess they would work for that too. ;) Sorry about the miscommunication.

No problem. I see that my original question was less than clear. By the way, I think I'm going to adopt the rules wholesale. They add some real flavor and flexibility to items, both sorely lacking in the DMG boilerplate. I can see clever characters pulling off desperate gambits with these items.

Hey, fafhrd, mind if I use this line in my sig?

Of course! I wish I'd given you something meatier to quote.:)

Coolness! Now this is what I like to hear. Let me know how things go (and if your players lynch you or not!).

No sweat.

"Faint illusion: The user’s lips glow with a dull green radiance. Whenever he speaks, others only hear nonsense sounds. The user hears these sounds atop his own words but everyone else hears everything from bells and whistles to barnyard animals. This effect lasts for 1d4 hours. Besides being a nuisance, the user must also succeed a Concentration check (DC 10 + spell level) to cast a spell with a verbal component properly."

Hell, I'll buy it just because someone has finally explained what happened to Damodar.

Can't say that was an inspiration for this backfire, but whatever gets ya interested is fine by me. ;)
