Shared NPC Resource

I have recently re-read Chris Chinn’s articles on scenario design, specifically the Protagonist Play (Situations, conflicts) series. The ideas presented represent for me an ideal in RPG campaign design, and my preferred style of play.

I recognize however, that to fully realize these concepts of play within a game system such as Pathfinder (with its complex rules set and vast array of character options), requires some additional preparation work.

In order to reduce the effort required to develop a campaign of this sort and as a general resource for all GMs, I propose a pooling of resources. I will use this thread to post an ongoing collection of NPC stat blocks, beginning at relatively low levels (around 3rd), intended to represent generalized types (i.e. guard captain, magistrates investigator, tribal hunter, etc.). The idea is to use the stat block as a template, and to re-skin this as necessary, to potentially represent numerous individuals.

I will generally post stat blocks as PDF file attachments for ease of use. I have made some minor changes to the way information is presented within the stat-block. This is a personal choice, and I do not expect anyone contributing to follow this style.

Ideally, these stat blocks should include, where necessary, a brief summary of the possible use of the NPC, tactics employed, as well as some simple options for adapting/modifying the NPC (e.g. alternate spell lists/powers).

I am personally open to NPC builds utilizing 3rd party, and D&D3.5, sources. I also encourage the use of character options which are not strictly legal (e.g. disregarding minor feat prerequisites, etc). However these should be properly motivated by the character’s concept (not simply an effort to maximize its combat effectiveness), and such builds should be clearly marked as such (i.e. by source and rule legality) in their post title.

My hope is that other GMs (and players) will agree to the value of this project, and post some contribution. The availability of character generator software, such as HeroLab, or PCGen, makes this process much simpler. If all interested were to post even a handful of NPCs, then we could very quickly build a very useful resource. I also encourage comment on the effectiveness of individual NPC builds, and discussion of their potential use in play (within combat or otherwise).

Finally, I would like to preserve this thread exclusively for posting NPCs. If you have any comments or questions, please use the associated discussion thread.

A member of the many quasi-religious warrior-sects associated with the philosophical contemplation (and practical implementation) of transcendent mental states. Heated debate between members of rival sects (sub-sects, individual schools and temples) infrequently disintegrates into armed conflict.

The Nirge-Mesa Zebi (neer-gay may-sa zay-be) see speed and fluidity of movement as the ultimate expressions of skill in battle. Absorbed within their battle-trance they move swiftly, and with ease, through their opponents formations, to strike at the enemies very heart.

The Nabha Bhrami represents one of the occupations of these lesser Transcendents. They act as special officers for the
Edür-Siidke ("Justicar of the Day"), a position somewhat equivalent to a city magistrate.

The Formoi (half-giants) are a far-ranging people, exploring and inhabiting distant and frequently inhospitable regions unknown to even seasoned explorers. Small tribes prosper along the edges of the Ashen Sea, where incursions into the endless wastes occasionally reward them with tradeable artefacts. Here they are worshipped as chaotic forces by frightened and superstitious villages.

Upon the eastern seas they are known as wave-traders and as the Mawja-Iblis (wave-demon), feared bands of coastal raiders. Their presence within the retinue of a Wata-tsu-mi (pirate king) are a mark of prestige, bought with gifts of Pema Drago---the wrathful lotus, further enhancing the goliath's terrible powers.
