I am not real happy with this product. It borders on awfully generic. Any suggestions to fill it in or spice it up are welcome.
Wave Raider Tribe
Geography
Location
The Wave Raider tribe is a human tribe that resides on a 7 small islands southeast of the Arctic Ice Village of Sh’te’av. The closest one is about 12 miles away the farthest over 20. Each island is no more than a mile wide and houses no more than 25 people. While each island is small they each have their own boat.. Each islands population is called a crew.
Weather
The weather of these islands is less severe than the Whalebone tribe or elves of Sh’te’av. A warm wind shortens the long winters and icebergs are rare in their waters. Even though they do have milder winters, it is still not a time for long trips. Inter-island voyages are all that occur during this time and even those are done infrequently. The Spring and Fall seasons are longer than their neighbors and have less violent storms. The Summer months are similar than to their northern islands.
Economy
These islands catch fish and harvest seaweed for food. However, only the very old and very young are involved in these activities. Most of the people are involved in two occupations: sailing and boat making.
At the age of 15 all boys and girls get indoctrinated in the ways of the sea. The Wave Raider boats are 25 foot long boats with enough oars for 12 rowers. For 3 years each child becomes trained in the way of rowing, navigation, astronomy, and other nautical trades. At the end of the three years children that have not met a certain level of seamanship are brought back onto land and work as boat builders and repairman.
While at sea, the Wave Raiders explore unchartered islands (for there are many), pillage uninhabited islands for driftwood or other resources, or trade with foreign cultures (peacefully or not). Their vast knowledge sometimes makes them information suppliers to the Court of Justice and/or the navy of Darkshore. They don’t often stray more than 50 or so miles from home but interaction with Darkshore or the Arctic Ice Kingdom is not unheard off.
The two biggest fears of the Wave Raider boats are sahuagin attacks and slavers. When dealing with sahuagin, often times there only option is to fight. To aid with this they have developed what they call “gill fire”. Gill fire is a tar like substance that burns undersea creatures but does no damage to wood. Sahuagin are particularly unfond of this.
When dealing with slavers, they often flee. Since their boats are often smaller than the typical slaver galley the increase in speed and maneuverability is as a big an advantage as their small crew size is a disadvantage. If forced into a battle with larger slave galley the results are often disastrous for the Wave Raiders.
Those who do not become sailors often find an aptitude for construction and repair. While it would seem this position would be looked down upon in the Wave Tribe society, the dock workers (there is a better name for them here please help!) are actually revered. While the crew is away, these professionals work on making tar and gill fire out of crushed shells, seaweed, and animal fat. These also prepare and treat driftwood (which there is an unusual amount of here) for repair work, and fashion nails out of bone, and sails out of furs and other material. When an island’s ship is lost at sea or damaged beyond repair ALL the islands shipyard workers combine forces to build a new ship as soon as possible.
Religion
Most of the inhabitants of the Wave Raider islands worship Deacor, god of sea travel. They believe it is he who protects their islands form the long northern winters and grants them their plentiful driftwood “harvests”. There is a mandatory ceremony to Deacor before any long journey.
Also, a small number of craftsman pay homage to Philas, the god of fire. They believe it is he who has helped them with their gill fire invention. It is not uncommon or frowned upon to pray to both these gods depending on the occasion.
Government
There is really no need for a complex government for the Wave raider islands. Each island is mostly self-suffecient. In times of emergency, such as a sahuagin land raid or fierce storm, the crew of these islands turn to Spishtum (N male water genassi Cleric 8). Spishtum is the patriarch of the largest crew the Strongafts. He looks quite human and the only noticeable difference he has due to his heritage is a wet feel to his skin and his extreme old age (300+).
Spishtum will direct the other crews in the best course of action and because of his remarkable wisdom, he is often right. It is not uncommon for Spishtum’s services to be utilized for more mundane matters as well. He grants an audience with the patriarchs of the other 6 crews once a month to discuss problems.
History
Before the “Great Fall” the Wave Raider people were once apart of a great land dynasty. Their lands consisted of much of the sunken land to the east. The city of Darkshore was once their largest port.
When the meteors hit, the patron god Farhad Shabazian, sacrificed himself and transported 7 families to the 7 islands of the Wave Raiders. Each family stood for a different ethic: Protection (LG), Justice (LN), Control (LE), Help (CG), Freedom (CN), Destruction (CE), and Balance (N). Each family soon learned that if balance wasn’t maintained they would also soon parish. They learned to work together and with time developed a trust of balance. That is why Spisthum is so revered today.
Each family has not mellowed completely, however. There are still differences in ethics and actions. This is most apparent when discovering small-inhabited islands.
