Shatter

Grayhawk

First Post
PH, p.251:

Using the 2nd level Shatter spell against a single solid object weighing up to 10 pounds per caster level calls for a 'Will negates (object)' save.

PH, p.150:

Saving Throw (object) basically means that a non magical or non attended object doesn't get a save.

So does this mean that the Shatter spell just automatically destroys any non magical, non attended object that falls within the casters 10 pounds per level weight range, without taking into consideration the objects HP and DR?

In a word, yes. Nonmagical, unattended objects are very easy to destroy. This usually isn't a significant balance issue, since most important objects are magical.

The thign that really sucks, is there is very little info given in the core books about what the weight of things are. You can find basic equipment weights in the dmg, but things like doors, walls, and building materials you have to guess.

Caliban had a page with the densitys of a huge array of materials he linked to at one point in order to deal with situations like this, but I'm afriad I can't find my bookmark....

Usually you can simply assume that any solid material larger than a chair or a small table is too heavy and/or too large to be affected.

No opening castle gates with this spell.

Too large?

It seems this spell is only limited by weight when targeting a single object.

Are the hinges on a door a "single object?" Is the lock on the door a "single object?" After all, you can buy it separatly in the PH.

Is one board of the city gate a single object? The bar blocking the door (you'd have to be inside to see it, but you could concievably be letting them in on purpose).

One bar of a jail cell?

My next sorcerer is going to take Shatter, and cast it all the time. On everything. ;)

An energy subsituted (sonic) cone of cold is my personal favorite. That's usually enough damage to take out just about any object, or door, for that matter. :D

Shatter is one of the most useful spell - especially at epic levels. Because it's one of the only spells that affect a Demi-Lich:confused:
