Sherlock

Only three episodes? Awww. Well I really enjoyed the episode. Some things were a little silly but it was still enjoyable, and the dialogue had bite.

One thing I didn't understand though - how did the cab driver win the pill game four times in a row? It was never explained. As Sherlock kept saying, it's just a 50/50 chance. The cab driver kept saying he knew how people thought and thus won the game every time, but that was a really unconvincing explanation for me.

I first saw the trick done on one of Derren Browns first outings - he had two envelopes, put a £50 note in one of them, shuffled them and put them both on the table - crucially putting one closer to the mark than the other. He than ran a confusing spiel about whether it was a bluff or double bluff. He beat the mark every time (even when it was the same mark again!).

I thought it was really clever seeing that trick come up as a plot device here, and it was potentially a clever trap for Sherlock.

BTW, I loved Cumberbatch and Freeman in their roles, and I thought bringing it up to date worked perfectly, with completely appropriate use of modern technology.

On other forums people have noticed similarities between this and Moffat's Doctor Who, particularly in how the two leads are portrayed. Many are saying Cumberbacht is stealing notes from Matt Smith's portrayal of the Doctor, but that's a disservice. Holmes was like this even in the original stories, so it'd more fair to say the Doctor was stealing notes from him.

Interesting note: Matt Smith originally auditioned for the Dr Watson role, but was a little too manic. However, Moffat liked him enough to invite him to try out for Dr Who and the rest is, as they say, history!

I thought the third episode was a welcome return to form, with the exception of squeaky-voiced Jim, who was just a little too oddball to take seriously.

Second ep wasn't as strong. Too much Asian exotica. But some nice bits.

Agreed. Writing wasn't as good, story wasn't as good. Moffet and Gatiss are clearly the best writers for this modern Sherlock - perhaps to be expected, considering it was their conception!

Boy I hate that cliffhanger at the end of Episode 3. And it came across as a little tacked on..

Well I hope they pick up more episodes but not sure if they should stick with the 1.5 hour format. Some of it comes across as a little contrived.

It's been confirmed that the BBC have commissioned a second series, but that it's unlikely to air for at least a year due to the writers' current commitments - Moffat's especially, obviously.

I agree about the episode length. I think an hour-long (or 45-minute if they want to cater to the international market) format might suit the show better - they can sit some stories comfortably within that format, and stretch others to a 2-parter if required.

Yup, Moffat has far more important things to be doing right now!

I disagree. I like the 90 minute format. Feels about right to me.
