For some monsters, it's a supernatural ability. Check out page 142 of the Monster Manual, Nightshade.

DMG p.73, MM p.9. DR that's Extraordinary would be evil, since magic weapons become mundane in an antimagic field.

i think it was stupid for ALL dr to be supernatural. Consider the Barbarian and Dwarven defender, something there just strikes me wrong with that being supernatural.

Consider the problems of DR in an antimagic field and you can see why its supernatural.
To keep both players and DMs from making invincible fighters.
Mostly helps the players though since few players have much natural DR compared to say dragons, devils and the like.
