Short Rests?

I don't stop counting rounds (therefore the encounter isn't over, therefore there are no short rests for you!) until a dying character is either stabilized, or has shuffled off the mortal/semi-mortal coil.

I'm not 100% sure this is in sync with the rules, but it's how we've played since day 1.

This is how I play it and having listened to the PVP POdcasts w/ Chris Perkins as DM, this is how he plays it too.

After one encounter a player was down and still making Death Saves, they were going to take a short rest and one of the players said he was needed to be healed since he was dieing. One of the other players asked something like, "But were done fighting, doesn't he just pop up?" to which the response was a resounding "No!"

Once they have stabilized, they can spend what they want on healing Surges.

That's a good way. The only mattered once to me, and the PC just rolled until she died. Fortunately she wasn't to mad at me, no one wants to go home with an angry player!

Actually, I think all you guys are wrong.

Compendium: Healing the Dying said:
If someone has stabilized you using the Heal skill but you receive no healing, you regain hit points after an extended rest.

If no one can get the guy up, either through activating his Second Wind or otherwise explicitly healing him, he is out for 6 hours. Ouchies.

I thought that a short rest was 1 minute, nto five.
Short Rest is 5 minutes.

Here's my understanding of the rules:

The player in the negatives still needs to make death saves every round until someone stabilizes the PC. If they use a Heal Check and make a DC 10 (I think) it allows the unconscious player to Second Wind.

Note: if the player used second wind during the combat, that option is no longer valid. This is why those silly little 10hp healing potions are important!

The ability to use surges is something that is done AFTER the 5min short rest, not during (contrary to some popular assumptions).

You know, unless you only have 5 minutes to rest, you can take multiple short rests. Refresh your healing/inspiring etc. words and second winds, use them, then rest again...sure, you'd want a dying char to be at least stabilized before you officially "end the encounter" but why jump through a bunch of hoops to get ppl back up once you get into the short rests.

To echo what was said by some previous posters, if characters are dying and have not been stablized, I don't end tracking rounds. I keep going through rounds and having people roll death saves until everyone is either stabilized or get the three strikes.

You get your healing surges and encounter powers back AFTER a short rest, and the five minutes is alot of rounds to have to make death saves.

I am positive that somewhere in the PHB is a rule that all dying characters automatically stabilise (and temporary conditions removed?) at the conclusion of the encounter. I don't recall that it required a short rest to achieve that.

Well they didn't stick such a rule in the Death and Dying section of the PHB, and I haven't seen it anywhere else.
