How did rust monsters come about, anyway? It's not like metal was available as food naturally.

Anyway, it's a gimmick monster. A bit like gelatinous cubes, mimics or piercers. I'd have little qualms to use it, but it's just the type of stuff that defines D&D as it's own genre. The motivation for designing such a monster is just to screw players.

Not that there was necessarily anything wrong with screwing the players every once in a while :cool:

I wouldn't hold it against a player if they used metagame info to avoid rust monsters. Long career in playing D&D should have its perks ;)
