Showdowdark Class Design: The Paladin! Live with Kelsey Dionne.

I haven't played with Mounts yet so I can't really judge the Paladin yet. The rules are kind of shallow which I dislike in this particular case. I feel like there should be a meaningful drawback or risk-reward mechanic of mounted combat except "this is really expensive to maintain and buy" that is also not highly dependent on Negative GM Fiat.

Like maybe rules for spooked/bloddied horses having a chance to throw you off and stun you for a round, or requiring some kind of Momentum (at cost of accuracy) to reach full damage potential.

I don't know. Just having a D12 weapon+shield+full plate and just engaging in stationary melee feels wrong. Even if Shadowdark tries to be light on rulings, it feels not right to just gloss over the mounted combat part.

My feedback is going to be to replace that whole section with "advantage on checks related to horses".

Where do you see it?

I just meant that I would replace this:

with: "You have advantage on ability checks related to horses."
Ah that's what you meant. Yeah that would make sense, but I feel like all ability checks related to horses is a bit powerful for a class that has a lot of non-horse things already. Sure Paladins are good at riding horses and doing horse combat, but ALL horse related checks feels like something a more nature or horse focused class should have. Something more akin to a Circus Performer or Naturist.

So I don't own shadowdark yet but I backed the Kickstarter for a copy. Does the weapons listed mean a Paladin can't use a dagger or a mace?
Yes. Weapon lists are shorter in Shadowdark and character classes have very specific archetypal weapons they can use. Compare with the Desert Rider above.

(Also, grab the free quickstart from DriveThruRPG or Arcane Library for free starter rules while you wait, including the four core classes.)
