Shugenja, Cleric or Spirit Shaman?

Which class should I choose as my back up character?

I would go with a Paladin/Cleric combo. Three levels of paladin and the rest cleric. Then take the dedicated spellcaster feat to offset the paladin levels so you can cast spells at full efficiency.

For a completely different character, you can try a Thanemage from Green Ronin's Advanced Players Handbook. Modest arcane spellcasting, a full BAB progression, ability to use all types of weapons and armor and some kickass special abilities. I would go with the 'Aura' manifestions against undead. I play this character in a campaign right now. He is good enough to be a front rank fighter and with a good intelligence, the aura manifestion is kick ass against undead.

I'd also suggest giving thought to the Tomb & Blood version of the Pale Master.

Tome & Blood. As in, "spellbook and ancestry" rather than "cemetaries and vital fluids"...

From a flexibility point of view, I'd reckon Cleric tops the list. So from those 3 that'd be my choice.

A casting focused Radiant Servant of Pelor is a terror to undead.

Have you got access to the Favoured Soul class? I'm a big fan of spontaneous casters and found that one fun. Wings and weapon focus!

Picking a relatively unusual god could be fun? Perhaps a cleric of some thiefy deity.

Prestige paladin from Unearthed Arcana could be a less clericy option. Seem to remember you need to be a fighter type/Cleric to qualify. It keeps advancing your cleric spells and you generally kick butt a bit more. Can't recall the exact specifics of it though.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I'll have to stick with WotC books, however, as I don't own the others and have neither the cash or the transportation to get any of the others. A paladin/cleric combo seem to be the best suggestions yet.

The True Necromancer PrC, is in Libris Mortis. If youd like it, I'd be happy to scan it, zip it up and send it your way.

Thanks...I have the WotC books everyone has mentioned (except for BoED), so I'm covered there. In fact, I LUV Libris Mortis.... lol

Thanks!

Thanks alot everyone... after reading everyone's posts and doing a lot of thinking about each suggestion, I went with Gez's cleric/paladin. I still plan to forge into battle with the flashing edges of my Soulknife's mindblades, but should he fall in glorious combat, Tezhev the cleric/paladin will step into his place.
