Silly arguments which define the game.

The alignment thing has raged for years are there any others?

The Newest one I'm aware of is Munchkin/Powergamer vs. Role-Player wars.... I think that started with release of White Wolf's World of Darkness stuff. I could be wrong on that origination though.

Well, if you have a look on the Wizards of the Coast boards, you see many threads like "Bards suck!!!", "Rangers suck", "Vacuum Claeners Suck!!!" etc. This always seem to go on, no matter what edition, and is countered by the "[class, race, or thing] are too powerful" threads.

Even in classless games, you still have similar arguments. ("x skill is too powerful!" "Jedi can beat any other Character!" etc.)

There's also low-magic vs. high-magic. (Even though it's just a campaign decision, I rant about it. ;) )

The correct 3e phrases are "X got the shaft" (if X is too weak) or "X is broken" (if X is too powerful.)

The phrase "sucks" is so... so 2nd edition!

They may be silly arguments, but they DO define the game.
The more Gamers argue about something, the more there the fantasy is for them (for lack of a better term, the more real the fantasy becomes for people.)
The more real it becomes, the more they care about what happens In Game.
The more they care, the more they enjoy.

Also, arguments create solutions and answers, which form a framework for the imagination to build on.

However, you have stated two arguments that are as old as the game of D&D.

The alignment argument is one of these arguments.

The Power-Gamer Munchkin versus Role-Player argument is the other argument - it was raging back in 1977, and it's still raging now.

I expect it will still be raging when I die of old age, somewhere around 2050.

Don't even dream of a resolution - there are those who say 5th level is Powergaming.
Then there are those who say that 100th level is just fine.

Give me a daily dose of both, thank you.
Power-Gaming and roleplaying together make for a balanced diet of Gaming.

Call them Two of the Four Gaming Food Groups (what the other two are, I leave to others to define.)

Sex and Violence

Oops! Those are two of the four pulp fiction ingredients. I always get those mixed up.

Hmmm...

Personally arguments, debates, or whatever you call them just turn me off.

I tend to dismiss people who like to debate things and do what I can to remove them from my life.

'Debating the issue' doesn't increase my interest in it, it just makes me want to not be involved with the people in question and possibly the topic in question as well.

It never creates and answers and solutions. Only frustration and bad feelings. It doesn't fire the imagination, it kills it dead.

There's nothing worse than a type A personality.

My take on it all at least.
