Silly general D&D rules question

I know this is really silly but I want to make sure I'm thinking of this correctly. For a +2 sword, the +2 gives you +2 to your attack rolls only with it, right? Not +2 to damage also? Thanks!

It gives +2 on both attack roles & damage.
