"Sorcerers of Majipoor" didn't work for me, either.

It was like reading a Shakespeare tragedy, except that it's set in an absurdly baroque world that manages to feel totally contrived.

And I feel absolute, pure, undiluted hatred burning with the strength of thousand suns towards Silverberg for the cheap trick he uses to "solve" the whole conflict at the end.

(All of the above assuming the Majipoor book I read and suffered with was, indeed, the Sorcerers.)

Majipoor...is this the series with the weird amnesiac juggler who becomes the pope (or pontifex, or what have you)?

Third chapter sounds about right, then.

The only one I've read all the way through was Lord Valentines Castle --which is the one about the amnesiac juggler who goes on to greatness. He doesn't become Pope until a later book.

LVC is one of my favorite SF/F novels. Its certainly worth reading. I haven't read any of Silverberg's other material set on Majipoor.

Odd that I had forgotten having read that :D but it was quite a long time ago. I remember enjoying it very much at the time but, to be honest, the details are eluding me.
