The familiar powers stack but that's it.

It's not very efficient to multiclass as a wizard/sorcerer. What benefits did you (or your player) hope to gain?

Yup, if he casts magic missile using a sorcerer spell slot, he only get's one missile.

If he prepares magic missile using one of his wizard spell slots, and then casts it, he get's 3 missiles.

You do get a lot of lower level spells, but you have to know them as a Sorcerer and as a Wizard.

I had an NPC like this because he came from a verymagical family so he was born with magical abilites (Sorcerer), but then he went to a mage school to study and became a Wizard. Very cool character, the PCs where impressed by him alot.

I haven't seen this done in my group, but one advantage would be that a specialist wizard multiclassed with a single level of sorceror would be able to cast spells from his banned school from wands, scrolls, staffs, etc.

They actually recommend this very thing in Tome and Blood. :) Remember that this is just a single level, though, not true multiclassing in the sense of 10/10 or 15/5. Just the one level has certain advantages, after that it's like Mal says.

Forgive me my ignorance, but I thought that casterlevels stacked.
So that a wiz/sor 5/1 would be casting his spels as a 6th level caster...

Or does this only apply to other situations??

Some prestige classes allow caster levels to stack, but they mention it explicitly. That's the only case I know of, really.
