Setting: Humanity has expanded to the stars through the use of jump-gate technology, and had a great civilisation that spanned many systems. Then, for some unknown reason, the gates failed and the civilisation fell. In the Sion system, human society is starting to make its way back to a more civilised existence.
The Dominion government rules with an iron fist behind a veneer of democracy. Many moons are starting to feel the pinch of their unfair taxation, and there is talk of ceding from the Dominion and forming an independent Alliance of Moons and Stations. Around Ancestor Sion, a planetary nebula at the centre of the system, the mining stations of the Macksen Alliance are recovering from a crushing war with the Dominion and the resultant anarchy provides rich pickings for smugglers and bandits. At the Outer Rim, an asteroid belt at the edges of the system, prospectors hunt for artefacts from a long-dead alien civilisation.
The Sion system was noted for unusual phenomena even before the fall, and now, for many of the system’s inhabitants, ghost stories and mysterious happenings are a fact of life. Humanity has also begun to develop unusual psionic abilities, unheard of before the fall. Ships mysteriously appear, in pristine condition, in completely different sectors to where they were destroyed, only to vanish days later. Apparitions of dead relatives or murder victims are reported on the stations of the Outer Rim. The source of these phenomena is a matter for speculation. Some suggest a backlash from humanity’s psychic awakening, others look to the mysterious destruction of the Ancients’ civilisation.
