Six From Gate Pass - A War of the Burning Sky Campaign (3.5)

"Lars takes the letter from Rantle's hands. OK, no problems. We're trying to leave town right now. It's not healthy for spell-casters here right now. We'll bluff our way out disguised as guards. You have any info on what is going on at the South Gates?"

Alric admires Kirio's guile. Send a message back to his boss that he's dealing with someone formidable and at the same time gain some much needed resources at the moment. That and being forced to run through the cold city naked is enough punishment for his impertinence. Clever. And he affords Kirio a wry smile indicating his approval.

Although, Alric feels that leaving an enemy in the city to flourish in this time is unwise and itches at the chance to settle things. Though he knows that his current task lies outside the city, he will return to deal with this Kathor...

"Calm yourself Arnir. This one thug is no threat to us, and even if Kathor were inside the walls he wouldn't be able to catch us before we get through the gates if we move quickly now. And sparing that one's life sends a message to this Kathor. Though now we must take care - the next meeting with these men of Black Horse company will likely not be so ineffectual now that they know what we're capable of."

Rantle smiles as the now naked thug thanks his gods and runs down the street, hands over his jewels. The slapping sounds of bare feet on frozen cobbles is too much for him to handle and he bursts out laughing. Turning back to Lars he says: "Cheers Lars, I really appreciate you helping me out on this one! Oh and tell her I said hi too."

"So listen lads, I think you've all recognized that you need to get moving. So why don't we walk while we talk yes?"

You all pack up your things, as well as whatever you've taken from the guards, and begin to walk down some side streets with the handsome scoundrel. After a few blocks, he stops and starts talking again.

"Alright, well we're away from the scene. Listen, I need you guys out of the city almost as much as you need to get out. The gates are locked up tighter than a virgi-" ... he pauses as he sees Torrent raise an eyebrow ... "-uhhhh bank vault. Anyway, the gates are fully staffed. As much faith as I have in your plan Lars, and I would never imagine to suggest another plan. I do have an offer for you. Do what you can with these uniforms or whatever and head to the gate ... oh and I hope you have some papers ... and then I'll cause a diversion for you. As Lars he can attest, I'm somewhat of a wanted figure in Gate Pass and given my incredible good looks, I'm rather easy to pick out of a crowd. Why don't I shadow you till you're bluffing your way out and I'll draw some guards away or take their attention off you. Thoughts? You need to make the decision quickly though, I've also got a whole city to help out and I've got maybe 20 minutes for you."

Arnir sighs as the thug is released "Well that was a mistake I hope I don't live to regret...or not live as the case may be."

He waves his hands as if to suggest everything should hurry up as he rolls his eyes "Yes, yes, distraction...excellent. Can we please get on with it? Clearly Kirio, Hrmir and I will not pass for city guards, so everyone else get suited up and take one of these notes." Arnir passes out the notes he forged last night.

Torrent accepts a forged gate pass from Arnir and then pulls on a city guard tabbard, grimacing at the smear of gore across the chest. "Ugh, I wish there was something we could do about the blood ... or maybe we can claim we got in a scuffle or something."

She turns to Lars: "So this is your plan Lars, what do we do and who does the talking?"

Kirio listens to the rogue and nods "I like it. If Lars can vouch for this fellow, then it only improves our chances."

"Yeah well, Rantle is OK. I know him. I wouldn't trust him with your valuables, but he's a good sort."

Lars nods at Torrent's suggestion to lay out his plan. "All right, we'll walk up to the gate. Alric, Bannock and Torrent, you will be City Guards under my orders. The less any of you say, the better. Less chance of screwing up our story that way. Arnir, Kirio and Hrimr will be important allies we're taking out of town for their protection. I will look and act like a City Guard officer."

He looks over Arnir's letter, "What does this say?" He nods and says, "Right, good. That's fine and just the right amount of vague."

He looks over at Rantle, "When we get within a few yards of the guards at the gate, do your thing, Rantle. I am sure you will think of some of your usual mischief." Lars grins, it is obvious that he thinks highly of Rantle, though he tries not to show it too much.

When the group are a minute or so from the gate:

Lars takes deep breath, "All right, I think some of you have figured out my 'talent'. And this is an emergency."

Lars turns around and mutters under his breath. His body shimmers slightly and all of a sudden, he is a short man with muscular arms and a slight paunch. He turns around and you see a severe looking Guard Officer sporting a spectacular bushy moustache. "Right then! On the double! March! Oh! And be on the lookout for crows." He winks to you and turns around, starting to march with a determined gait.

OOC: Lars' intentions is to walk up to the main entrance and act imperious and busy, expecting to be let through quickly as a matter of course.

Rantle bows slightly and offers his farewell: "All my best Lars and good luck beyond the walls. Torrent ... try not to miss me too much eh?" He then climbs up a drainpipe and follows behind you via rooftop.

Your group approaches one of the southern gates, its large heavy wooden doors looming over you. The stone walls have a few city guard members patrolling, or keeping hands warm at braziers filled with hot coals. They scan the area beyond the wall, or clean and prep their heavy crossbows. To the right of the door, but built into the wall, is a gate house on the lower floor of a watch tower. More guards stand outside shooting the breeze and watching attractive girls on the street.

The guards look up as you approach and most snap to attention; three others stay seated on barrels by a small fire. They turn to regard you as they try to stay warm and sip tea from tankards. One guard steps forward and salutes saying: "Good morning lieutenant. Nothing to report. As you know, Captain Herreman was out on inspection around dawn and has moved on to the northern gates. We gave those Ragesian bastards a run for their gold last night." He stammers and coughs, trying to cover up, but you can tell that he is nervous and rambling slightly. "The Captain said nothing of a shift change sir ... and uh ... pardon me for asking, but did you see some action this morning? Your squad looks ... worn out. Also, why are you escorting those individuals? Do we need to lock them in the gate house?"

Lars returns a perfunctory salute, typical of the many senior guard officers he's had the misfortune to meet. "At ease. We're not here to relieve you. Please open the gate to let us through, we're on special assignment. And yes, we've seen action, and likely we'll see more. Damned Ragesians."

OOC: Eh! Damned fine roll."

The guard snaps to: "ah yes sir, of course sir. Those damned Ragesians sir!"

He coughs again, uncomfortably and then continues: "I'll uh need some papers sir. The City Council has given strict orders and the Captain reminded us of them this morning. Nobody is to leave the city without the Council's approval. Can I see your papers sir?"
