Skate Boards

BryonD

Hero
How can I make a character who is really good at skate-boarding or other x-game stuff?

(Or any sport for that matter?)

To stick with skate boarding, how would you do that?
None of the skills seem to fit.

Obviously, it could be a Dex check. But I do not think that being an expert skate boarder is a simple matter of having a high dex. It is a skill.

So far, the best idea I have had would be to let it be a DEX check, and then have an advanced class that gives bonues to the check.

Or just add a custom talent tree to the fast class.

Any other ideas?

I would use balance as the governing skill. Then you could make a list of DC's for various tricks and stunts. Create a feat that gives bonuses to skateboarding and you are on your way. A straight Dex roll means even DC 15 checks would depend too much on luck.

Spycraft introduces a Sport skill. It operates just like the craft and knowledge skills. The design of d20 Modern doesn't really support that solution. Whenever possible you should just try and use the skill that seems to best fit the situation.

I'd agree with Forcegypsy, I had to figure something similar out for snowboarding. I figure it's balance for most of it - simple riding of the board is balance, jump checks to get airborne (with bonuses to the check for a ramp), and tumble for the particularly spectacular airborne tricks. Balance would also be used for tricks like rail riding where the board's not airborne. Only problem is I've no idea what the DCs should be:). I figure they've got to start pretty low for simple riding if a klutz like myself can manage to stay upright, but more than that I've no idea.

Thanks for the thoughts.

At first I did not want to use balance, because it seems much more specialized. But I am convinced that it is probably good enough.

I think advanced tricks should still have a really high DC, requiring a high Balance AND some bonuses from an advanced class or something.

I'll be interested to see how UA handles it.
