Skeleton Key Games info? Magnetic tiles

First Post
First, does anyone know if Skeleton Key Games is still in business? Thier website is still up, but doesn't look like it's been updated in a while.

Second, I just downloaded all thier free dungeon tiles (which are awesome, BTW), I'm just wondering how I should proceed with them. I printed them in full color on some nice cardstock paper. I was thinking about having the sheets laminated, but I would like to cut them out to thier appropriate shapes first. Would they still be able to be laminated like that, or should they be laminated first and then cut to shape? And cutting them after lamination... wouldnt that make the lamination come off?

Has anyone else used these. I have about 4 sets of the Skeleton Key magnetic tiles. It would be great to make these just like those, but I don'tknow how to do it.

Yep - the laminate will peal up some. I suggest you use them to base some HirstArts dungeon pieces on. :D

I have miles and miles of sheet magnet - I have not seen their product for obvious reasons. I would think you could make it fairly simply - I'll go to their site and come up with some suggestions.

OK - I think I have figured out a way to make these magnetic tiles.

1. Save/design the free dungeon tiles you wish to use.

2. Print them.

3. Laminate them.

4. Seal the edges with a two-part epoxy.

ALT to 3 & 4 - If you are using an ink printer spray the tiles with matte finish. Then paint some gloss varnish over them - use two or three coats. A bit more time consuming, but longer lasting than laminate.

5. glue them to sheet magnets - lots of resources for this, but the best ones are free. At my place of work they hand out mini-magnetic calendars every year. I just put out the call that I would like them and voila miles of sheet magnet. Ask a local realtor they usually have a place that will make magnetic signs for cheap - ask them to sell you some plain magnetic sheet.

6. Make a playing surface. I suggest using Paper Steel (tm) from Olympian Games. You can make a huge board that you can fold up and store easily.

Good luck and let me know how it turns out!

Thanks!! I will try putting the gloss varnish over them after I cut them out. I'll see how that works. I just wish there was a way to laminate it with all the odd angles. I'm thinking maybe I could cut them out to shape, then glue them to a black card stock, cut THAT to a square shape, cutting close on the side or side where I'll join a hallway or other piece to. THEN laminate it.

One other thought coming from my brother the modelling maniac:
Snap adhesive plexiglass to shape and adhere it to the tiles - they would last forever.

Like I said he's nuts, but it would last forever.

Also, I've been told that certain art stores have clear plastic sheets that are adhesive on one side. I can apply it to the tiles, then cut to size/shape and have exactly what I'm looking for.

I'll try to work on this later this week and let anyone who cares know how it turns out.

As Ed's webmaster, I can tell you that there is some cool stuff in the works - and that SKG is not dead. ;) Keep an eye on the site and look for an announcement from Ed soon... :D

Greetings guys,

The truth is, SkeletonKey Games has been near death for quite a while. This is mostly due to my growing freelance career as a cartographer and illustrator. I have made considerably more money as a freelancer in the RPG industry than I ever did as a publisher.

With all that said, SkeletonKey Games is not dead. It will change a little over over the next month and there will be quite a bit of new freebies that tie in to our new PDF tile product. For about $7.00 you will be able to get 5.5 sq. ft. of tiles and that's if you only print them out once and doesn't include another sq. ft. of free tiles released with each set.

Things will kick off with two cave sets and a very cool set of overgrown ruins.

I should make the first official announcement this week.

Hi Ed,

I was looking over your website, and thinking about purchasing several of your magnetic tile sets.

Will the new PDF's you were mentioning also be available as magnetic tiles ?

Thanks.

Currently, there are no plans for more magnetic tiles. We will have instructions on making your own magnetic tiles with the printable PDFs.

Cheers - Ed
