If you want to keep it out in the open, I would certainly go with the opposed roll. In addition, if they roleplay belief in an unreliable result reward with inspiration as above.

On top of that, to discourage metagaming, if a player appears to ignore what their character thinks due to a low roll, then next time they roll for that check I would impose disadvantage with a comment along the lines of "You didn't trust your instincts last time you tried to do this so you're not confident in your ability". Beyond that, its then up to you as the DM to not punish a low roll too heavily with too much disinformation and to allow the players to roleplay with their results.
