Skill Point Gain (and Loss) from Magic Items?

Alright, I know this is an age-old question that has probably been asked a few times, but I couldn't find it in any of the current threads, and the Search function didn't work for me, so...

Say a character finds a Headband of Intellect and gains a level while wearing it. I assume he gains the extra skill points that would be granted for his new Intelligence.

What happens when he removes the Headband? Does he immediately lose those skill points? Should he keep track of Headband skills separately from his "natural" skills?

You cannot loose skill points, actually skill ranks, at all, except if you lost one or more levels due to energy drain.
