Skill Points for ECL Monsters

Starting skill points

I'm pretty sure somewhere in Sage Advice (or something to that effect) ... creatures with +HD do not gain 4x skillpoints when they turn 1st lvl. ECL creatures without extra HD do gain the 4x skill points (I think)

hey thundershot: sorry didn't mean to poke a hole in your post! :)

so an ogre-fighter1 with 14 int (roll 18, -4 int ... suck it up instead of using that silly DMG table :)) ... would have 6 (ogre) +2 (int) +2 (EHD for large creature) +2 (fighter) +2 (int again for lvl1)= 14 skill points.

10 of those should be spent on the 3 ogre skills, the other 4 on any fighter skills (or cross-class)

There's no minimum that I know of. It's 6 + INT mod + 2 (from the extra hit dice).

You mean +3. Ogres have 4 HD.

Spatula: Right. They don't get x4 skill points. They get 6 + INT MOD + 1 / extra HD. Templates on the other hand, use whatever the character class is. And creatures with only one HD. Otherwise, use the Monster Manual.

No, +2. Ogres have 2 EHD (Extra Hit Dice). A standard L creature has 2 HD, the EHD are all the HD above 2 in their case.

<blink> <flips to page 11> Well I'll be damned. Learn something new every day... Thanks!

Thank You, now what is the Max Rank for those skills?

The DMG states that NPCs should be handled this way. So it is implied that PCs should as well. But it doesn't clearly say so anywhere.

I think it is the method that must be assumed for now, but I hope they clearly state it one way or another in Tooth and Claw.

HD=lvl for the most part ... (I think) so it would 7 ranks (4 HD +3).

If in doubt just make it one rank per HD (that means creatures with real classes are just that much better!)

Hello,

For monsters, the maximum rank for any skill is the creature's Hit Dice + 3.

Reference: How To Create a Monster, Recipes for Disaster by Skip Williams (Available at: http://www.darkwood.org/sj/sj3e/index.html), Page 10.

That seems to be correct, at least for monsters without a class. However, it contradicts the notion of ECL, especially for those monsters with a class. Max Rank is determined by your character level and ECL figueres into this. So, maybe the Max Rank is still dependant on Character Level and maybe only for monsters with a class.

Use ECL for starting gold, starting xp, xp needed for next level and average party level.
Use total number of HD (monster and class HD) for everything else.

Everything else includes max skill ranks. ;)
