Skype Issues

Ok, so my dad lives in Germany and wanted me to get skype to communicate with him easier. I know nothing about this program, but decided to download it and all. I do so. I install it, select valid username and password...and can't connect. I tried a few times, restarted my computer like it suggested, still not working. Is this normal? I have a 64 bit Vista computer, if that's why. I'm just fed up with Skype right now. Also, I was just reading a thread on here, someone posted their character's starting stats, and skype turned it into a phone number to click to call! O_o

Anyone know what I could do? I guess the unintended phone number thing I'm just going to have to learn to deal with, though I'd love it if there were an option to turn that off altogether. I have no image of that ever, ever being useful to me. I do picture myself accidentally clicking and ending up getting charged for making a call, though...

EDIT: And maybe I'm just being overly paranoid about how horrible this piece of work is. But I've noticed since the moment I installed it, the web has been a lot slower in response to my actions. I click in a search field, and it takes fully 10 seconds sometimes for the blinking | to appear. I type and sometimes the computer "freezes" for a while before displaying what I've typed. That happens time to time, sure. But it's happening a LOT now. Thsi is a 6 month old computer with very little on it...

I loaded Skype yesturday also. Here is what I found....

It didnt work (same like you) and my browser was moving like it was set in cement.

Here is the problem I discovered. I went into my browsers(internet explorer) '[Tools]' menu I think it was. I then selected the 'remove skype browser add-on' or something worded like that...

then once it was gone, my browser was back to top speed, and skype let me register finally and run it. Also I should mention that when I was loading it the first time I DID NOT load the google bar add on etc..

good luck I hope this helps. I also have 64bit Vista.

Peace,

You were extremely helpful! I went into tools-->skype add-on (or something like that) and then clicked an uninstall button. Browser's zooming again, no more inadvertent phone numbers, and while it still took almost 2 minutes, skype actually connected me. Thank you!

The Number Highlighting is annoying. It requires SkypeOut anyway, but that's how they make their money.

I love Skype otherwise, it's a great, free program.
