My group had a player join who is running a shifter ranger skyseer. Since I run my game online using Fantasy Grounds, I have a chance to really write some descriptive dreams. I'm curious how other DMs deal with Skyseer questions though. Do you have any special requirements for the questions? Are you douchebaggy when the player asks obscure or broad questions (I have a few times)? Do your dreams tend to by abstract or reality based?
I'd love to see some other DM's Examples of dreams.
Here are a few examples from my most recent session which takes place deep in the Temple from Digging for Lies.
First, a series of visions relating to various PCs' back-stories. I thought it would interesting to give a glimpse into their various histories and fill in some gaps. The first one is about the party's human wizard. The story is that she was originally a hamadryad and was subjected to experimentation.
You see a large glass tube standing against a poorly lit wall. The tube is filled with water and has a vaguely humanoid shape within. Upon closer inspection, the shape seems to have leaves in its hair. As you wipe away a tin layer of fog from the glass surface, you realize you are staring into the face of an ageless Neth. Her eyes spring open, staring back at you in fear shortly before the scene fades to black.
This second vison is about the party's leader, a changeling rogue, who was made an RHC agent at Delft's behest. (For this campaign, I made Delft his grandpa.
You reach out and grasp a set of iron bars with both hands. You are being held captive in some cage or cell. You hear others calling out, signaling that you are not alone. You see a man with a cane and a bad limp working his way down the aisle between cells only to have him stop and stare at you. You glare back at the man, defiantly and realize only too late that this is a slightly younger version of Delft. You glance away to a nearby buck of filth to catch a glance at your reflection only to see that your face is Liam's. You turn back to Delft and he points his cane at you and says, "You will do, boy"
This next vision is of the team's dwarf paladin yerasol vet.
You blink a few times, your vision blurred for a moment. As it clears, you realize you are in the middle of a smoke covered battlefield. You feel as though there should be sound where there is only silence. As you glance around, you see dwarves grabbing weapons from the ground and attempting to slay Tiefling attackers. You look down to see you still have your hammer and shield but your beard has been singed almost back to your chin! You try to stand but have difficulty. Once upright, you pull an arrow from your shield-arm shoulder. You catch a brief glimps of your reflection in the shield of a fallen comrade. Mael's face stares back at you momentarily before you wade back into the fray,
Lastly, I gave the skyseer a very raw look at his own painful past. He had been a slave at one time.
You open your eyes to see a familiar scene. You feel the cold sting of iron manacles and the weeping blood of whip scars across your back. You realize you have been captured and are being flogged by a masked humanoid. With every breath you take, the sharp pains of broken ribs stab at your side and your mouth trickles blood as you struggle for each additional gasp of air. You pray for the vision to end and are eventually blessed with your request. You lose conciousness just as the hooded figure raises his whip to beat you once more...
Here is an example of the skyseer's questions being answered. For reference, they took an extended rest inside the temple on the back side of room 7.
Vikhim: 1: What is in the room below us, besides lasers? 2: Where will the teleportation behind the seal take us? 3: Who's behind the conspiracy?
As you fall asleep for the night, you concentrate on three questions. Many visions swirl through your head until finally three repeat with regularity. The first vision is that of the room beyond the force walls. You see bridges of light flashing on and off as thoughtform creatures trigger various colored stones on the platforms.
The second vision fades into being. You find yourself staring through a tunnel in a wall of the temple. Amidst the tunnel, you see a corpse float by, weightless. On the opposite end of the tunnel, you see what you can only think is the plane of Apet. As you start to enter the tunnel, a pair of double doors close, sealing Apet from your graps but the portal on your side remains open.
The third vision begins to form. You see a number of signet rings laying on a desk. Each ring has a different name but your recognize the first and last names on each ring start with the letters O & B respectively. You see a number of hands, obscured by shadow reach out to retrieve the rings one by one. Finally, the last hand reaches for the final ring. Although you feel this ring is not the most important, it is the only one your truly recognize. It belongs to Lady Saxby herself.
