Slaine RPG

Has anyone else seen the Slaine/D20 RPG?
I think Mongoose have done a fantastic job of converting the Heroic Celtic setting of the comic strip to D20.
I particularly like the Taunt as a ranged attack rules for combat, and of course the Warp-Spasms.
I can't wait to use this setting.
Well worth a look, even if you haven't read the comic strip.
Any opinions?

I have not seen it, but I would love to see a review while I am waiting. :)

Not sure I'm up to a review, but if you are a fan of the strip, you should like this book, and if not, then it presents a very different setting which is well worth considering.
Its a hardcover book, almost 200 pages, full of art from the comics (so its very nicely illustrated) by Fabry, Bisley, McMahon etc.
The chapters are:-
Characters
Feats
Goods & Weapons
Combat
Eyes Without Life, Sundered Heads, and Piles of Carcasses (mass combat rules)
Earth Power
A Guide To Slaine's World
Adventures in the Land of the Young
Gods & Godesses of Tir Nan Og
Bestiary
Campaigns in Tir Nan Og

The setting is Tir Nan Og, the legendary Celtic Land of the Young. As a PC, your choice of races is Human, Warped One or Dwarf. Classes are Druid, Noble Warrior, Thief, Tribal Warrior or Witch.
All Human/Warped One characters start with a Geas (magical compulsion) or Weird (special destiny).
Honour and reputation are also very important. Lose too many Enech points, and you will be cast out from society; it could even become a crime not to attack and kill you on sight!
Will that do for a start? I can give you more info if anbody is interested. Are you familiar with the strips? There is loads of specific background info in this book. What do you want to know?

Great! Thank you.

Are you familiar with the strips?

I never heard of it before this book was announced.

What do you want to know?

Any interesting new mechanics?

In particular- the ads mentioned being able to injure your enemies with insults (or something along those lines).

Could you give a light example of how that works?

Thank you

By insulting an opponent you can wind him up into a maddened state, whereby he loses all dodge modifiers to AC, including his DEX bonus, and may only make partial actions which must be attacks directed at his taunter.
A Taunt attack (max range 30ft) uses your normal base attack bonus plus CHA modifier.
The defender makes a WILL saving throw as an opposed roll against your attack, adding 1/2 his Enech (honour)score to the roll. If he fails he is maddened.
As the book suggests, ideally the player of a character using the Taunt attack should come up with the actual insult, with the DM giving small bonuses to the attack roll for particularly telling insults

I'm not at all familiar with the comic. Is the setting basically the a fantasy Celtic setting?

Yes, it is based on Celtic fantasy.
The Slaine setting mixes elements of various celtic myths and legends, and focuses on the Tribes of the Earth Goddess, the Tuatha de Danaan, beset by Fomorians, Drune Lords and berserkers of Midgard.
I enjoyed the strip when it was in the British comic 2000AD (home of Judge Dredd), and my proud boast is that I live a few miles from Wyrm's Head, in Wales, which featured in the strip as the location of a dragon-farm.

Thanks, I think the confusing thing was it was always mentioned in relation to the 2000AD thing, so I was never sure if it was modern or not.

2000AD wasn't just one title (a la Judge Dredd as some think) the comic actually used to have a bunch of different strips which eventually became titles of thier own... among them were Judge Dredd, Nemesis, Rogue Trooper, Slaine, ABC Warriors, Strontium Dog and so forth... most I remember were Futuristic with the exception of Slaine which was full on Celtic fantasy..slaine himself was very much the conan'esque figure, muscled, scantily clad, kicked butt with a vengeance and had all the gorgeous nubile women hanging off him.
