Small campaign setting map

Any Comments?

Just posting this here for some comments and feedback. Not even sure when (or if) I’ll get to play in this, as I have two homebrews using my own rules system on the go. This was meant to be a back-up, in case both my groups imploded at some stage, and I needed a “quick” setting for D&D3E.

The map (note that attached version has been resized) was created from a blank map available on the WOTC website... changed it a bit, and added all the names and settlements. Basically a “classic” fantasy setting… a human kingdom surrounded by demi-human areas, barbaric plainsmen over the mountains, and horrible creatures beyond that, including the Dragonblight, full of… er, dragons.

I called it BLACKMOON in homage to Dave Arneson’s Blackmoor campaign setting, as well as WOTC’s Andy Collins’ Blackmere campaign (the adventure path for which is detailed on his great website http://www.andycollins.net/) from which I wanted to steal the campaign storyline.

Made the scale small to drive a nice and tight “local” campaign. Also made it this way in reaction to some of the ridiculous scales one sees on both published and homemade maps nowadays. Even great settings such as Midnight and Dawnforge, as well as Eberron, have these HUGE areas that seem to have very few settlements… take a look at a map of England to see how many towns one should find in a 100-mile radius of each other in a realistic setting.

(While I’m moaning, why do so many settings also have sweeping timelines where thousands of years pass with very little history changing… again look at England, say from 1200-1500, to see how much can change in just 300 years?)

Anyway, interested in any feedback, on the map or on my comments about scale and history.

Sarcasm, CL, sarcasm! This guy has fooled 80+ of us, albeit unintentionally (MAYBE - his profile says he was last on the boards today), so I figured I'd try and draw him out with a ruse - looks like you've blown that though!

edit: Maybe this is the guy who did the Shadizar map from the Conan boxed set?

The local feel of your campaign is fine if that's how you want it, but the deal with published campaigns have areas with very few settlments I feel comes down to the fact that this is d&d. If England had orcs, goblins, kobolds, and gnolls loose on the countryside pillaging and plundering all of those small towns in a 100 mile radius, I think they might join togather in larger settlments as well.

Once again I think this stems from the simple fact that it is d&d. How much different would our world be if there was magic? So much of our technology probably wouldn't have been invented as early as it was. Why? Because there isn't need. Who needs lightbulbs when any ol' 1st level wizard can cast light. Who needs tank's when your armies are backed by high level wizards.

OK OK... sorry

The map seemed to upload OK, but I realised that it wasn't there when the responses started coming in.

All my mails to ENworld asking for help, BTW, were ignored.

Today again I've tried everything to upload it, and nothing's working... CAN ANYONE HELP IF I E-MAIL THE MAP TO THEM???

I would get a free website (angelfire.com, geocities, etc) and upload the map there. Then get the url link to it, and copy that entire link (http://blahblahblahblah.com/blahblahblah.jpg).
THen, to view it here, type: (Don't put the periods after "img," I just did that to show you, otherwise it wouldn't have shown up for me)

[img.]http://your link for the map goes here[/img.]

And that should do it...

Or for that matter, if you email it to me at

fallen_ishmayl{at}yahoo{dot}com

I'll get it up for you.

OK, OK, I thought there was a chance that I was having computer problems and images weren't showing up for some reason. Sorry...
