The end of an era! I discovered the show the summer after season 4, watched it addictively on DVD, and have enjoyed it ever since. I remember noticing a distinct X-Files vibe in the early seasons, which I liked, and I was intrigued by the ever-changing web of relationships (who knew what, who liked whom, etc.). I liked the sci-fi feel it had, rather than a superhero feel. The episodes and seasons have been uneven since season three, but every season has had is outstanding moments. I still miss Lex and Lana, as well as Lionel and the Kents. I am not a "Superman" fan but I am a Smallville fan and it has been a pleasure.

Well I gave up on the show about a year and a half ago when it just got too silly. But I watched the finale anyway, just so I wouldn't miss one last opportunity to snark. Problem is I had no idea what was going on. Oh well.

I don't get what was up with Lionel. Didn't Lex push him out a window two or three seasons ago? And one last look at those ridiculous surgical instruments and strapped gurneys Smallville always loved to put into evil medical facilities and bad mental hospitals. I think they padded the episode out with way too many cheesy cliches in the dialogue too. And do the writers like Final Fantasy VII or something? All I could think of was "Meteor".

But you know what? It was worth it for the last five minutes.

Not exactly what I was hoping for, but close enough. I hoped Clark would finally stop whining, grow a pair, and don the suit as the Superman theme played in the background. It happened. The credits cut the theme short on broadcast, but tht's easily remedied:

Well, it could have been better, but given the budget constraints they had, I found it a good ending to the show. One I have personally watched every episode of.

Things that jumped out at me:

-So Chloe is Speedy's mother? Is that what they were hinting at there when her little boy looked over at the red and yellow bow and arrows? And Green Arrow's love child to boot? Interesting..... :)

-Would have liked to have seen more Clark in a well designed Superman suit, but that probably would have blown their budget. The Brandon Routh suit wasn't cheap from what I recall from my Superman Returns Special Edition DVD bonus features.

-Would have preferred full blown Darkseid and not just a possessed Lionel, but ok.

-Superman inspiring the people which in turn repels Apokolips, hmm ok. When they talked about that I figured thats how it would work. But Superman pushing the entire planet away? No thanks. Thats too Pre-Crisis uber-Superman for me.

-The end seemed kind of compressed and thus overly melodramatic. Too bad Warners couldn't have given them a real big budget and essentially made the finale the new Superman movie. That said, I'm looking forward to the new movie.

-I liked how they worked in Lex losing his memory of Clark's true identity. Sucked for Tess. Her character had really grown on me towards the end of the show.

-Finally, whats the deal with the CW cutting away during the John Williams theme during the final credits to show a freaking Gossip Girl preview?! Come on! I invested 10 years of my life into that show. Let me at least watch the entire credits and listen to the classic John Williams score.

He is a more twisted evil Lionel from an alternate universe where Clark was found by the Luthors instead of the Kents and thus grew up as Lex's adopted brother. Clark is evil in that universe too. Anyway, he escapes into the normal world after Green Arrow from that world pretty much exposes him as a criminal and he loses his empire.

Once he comes into the real world he tries to take over Luthorcorp, but Tess proves he is not the "true" Lionel and he flees and goes underground, re-appearing in the Finale.

This type of thing was my only gripe about the finale. Every single time I started to get emotionally involved with the story, every time the music and pace soared...they cut to commercial.

Ok, I get it. They have to pay the bills and this is television. But I'm looking forward to seeing this episode on DVD, without all the interruptions.

Except for my rant above, I was pleasantly surprised by the episode. It nicely wrapped up things, finally moved Clark to Superman, and generally hit all the right buttons for me.

And speaking of Chloe, the beginning made me laugh. The fandom has been at the end of every single season, "They're gonna kill Chloe" cause she's not a canon character. Here, she not only survives until the end of the episode, but 7 years after. So freakin' hilarious. :)

And reads aloud a comic-book which reveals Superman's secret identity? That was bizzare.

There's that too. But think of all the people who said she was going to die over the years and then consider this: Chloe and Clark are the only two characters who have been on the show for its entire run.

I love the irony.
