Smallville - 29.09.2004 [SPOILERS]

Lionel had himself shanked, to get out of the maximum security prison, and into the lower-security medical center! Didja notice the KNIFE his attacker used? That was no metal-shop shank! That was a store-bought!
Nice theory, though if that were true, I'd expect Lionel to seem less worried when he noticed the missing guard, and the guy doing the shanking be more careful about where he was putting the blade. He certainly didn't seem to be trying not to miss vital organs. I can still see the theory being true, though. It makes sense that Lionel would need to get out of his cage to set up the Freak-of-the-Week assassination attempt.

Unfortunately, something tells me the show will never let us know whether the theory is indeed true. The Pretender this show ain't. :p

Still, it was a fun way to pass an hour.

On the shanking: When Lionel was taking Lex to task for "wounding what he couldn't kill", I kept expecting Lex to say something like, "But, Dad, I didn't wound something I couldn't kill -- quite the opposite."

That's actually how I took the whole thing. Lex was proving something to his dad. No matter how much he hates Lionel, Lex still wants his praise. That's his weakness. It's also exactly the sort of disfunction that would cause a megalomaniacal supervillain to launch into a speech before killing the hero, thus giving the chance to escape.

Mmmm. Smallville. One of the last bastions of genre TV left. And they left it right across from Lost. Oops.

Either way, this ep was pretty good I have to say. I am starting to REALLY like Lois. She is everything that Lana isn't. I like spunk and the character is simply entertaining to watch. Lana doesn't suck but 3 seasons of the writers not giving her much to work with is a bit much. Hopefully, this tatoo/warrior woman/mystery/Joan of Arc/Taco Queen thing will spice things up a bit. Ooo!! Those wacky cave glyphs. :)

I'm thinking that the shanking was to let Lionel know that Lex could get to him. Although I wouldn't be surprised to see it be Lionel having himself done in for reasons explained above. But Lois has a pretty good eye for all things Luthor/Kent at this point and she called Lionel being set up so she's 2 for 2.

Side note: Who was sword-boy? Was he a character from the comics? I never read Superman so could someone in the know fill me in?

Chloe coming back? All good. We all saw it coming and it's not like anyone tried to really hide it. I like her character so that works. The show hasn't taken that Buffy/Alias/Angel step of really shaking things up (no, having Pete leave doesn't count) by Season 4 but this is pretty close. Clark finally distrusting Lex, Lana with a new BF and Lois being in town is probably as close as we'll get.

I'm looking for this to be the season that either makes or breaks this show in terms of "greatness." For examples (add your own) I think back to Season 2 of Buffy, Season 4 of Angel and Season 5 of DS9 as the point when the show REALLY kicked things up a notch in quality. Last season showed tremendous promise but there were a few weak spots and points where the producers fell back on old tricks. If they want to dump the whole bag on the table this season I will be a happy guy.

Love Smallville and liked this ep.

Some gripes though:

1. Louis Lane defeating military trained soldiers

2. Being able to find Chloe's first safehouse (and it was in Smallville?)

3. Louis being able to dig up Chloe's grave (in apparently broad daylight) and noone stopping her

4. Did Louis and Lana cover the grave before they left?

5. Lana's boyfriend. We lost Chloe for this chump? He even gets to be in the intro! Was this guy in the comics, out of curiousity?

6. While it was nice to hear Clark's parents say that Lex helped out in rescuing Chloe, it seemed too much of a turn around considering their previous attitude towards the Luthor's and Lex in particular.

7. Clark giving Lex such a hard time. It's not like Clark doesn't have his own secrets and IMO, Clark has been giving off major "holier than thou" attitude. And people wonder why Lex is such a "bad guy". I would be too after all the crap I get from everyone in Smallville.

Don't get me wrong, I love the show, that's why I like to nitpick ;)

You mean the one that blew up? Things blowing up tend to be hard to hide anymore, plus that if it's not a safehouse anymore there's no reason to keep it secret.

I think that was part of them trying to be sneaky and making us think Chloe really was dead. I'll bet she's back in the credits this week.

Martha and Jonathan have been warming up to Lex over the whole series. They gave him a wedding gift with lots of sentimental value, and Lex saved them from financial ruin.

I hope so! At least being back in the credits, but I have a bad feeling this new boyfriend is going to be something like a Whitney and be with us for a while. And I have a feeling the Chloe will be relegated to "recurring guest star", something like how Louis Lane is right now. I hope they make Louis a permanent player, she starting to grow on me.

Yeah, I can buy that, especially Jonathan giving the watch to Lex, but that occurred 2 or 1 seasons ago? I've forgotten how the Kents and Lex relationship has been of late. I can buy Martha being understanding, she seems like that kind of person, but not too sure about Jonathan.

And the Kents should know about Lex's "Clark Room", so they probably wouldn't be too happy with Lex about that.

Oh, and I love it everytime Clark says Louis' name, it just sounds so "Superman".

Lois (low-iss), not Louis (lew-iss). Sorry about that.

Perfectly all right. :)

I realized my typo, but was too lazy to change it. I figured that people would know what I was talking about.

But I always get that mixed up, Louis / Lois.

Who is going to stop her? She is basically Chloe's only living relative in Smallville (at that time).

Speaking of relative, where is her dad at? We saw him being taken fromt he first safe house but I don't remember seeing him in the second one.
