The characters had just arrived into a city by boat, they were on a secret mission for the church of Pelor (there was a Paladin in the group). When they got to town it was getting late so they decided to check into a inn and get something to eat. They found a good inn and started to check in. That's when the small red dot came in through the open doorway and exploded with them standing there (fireball). They started the first round of combat in a burning inn full of innocent bystanders with all their equipment sitting at their feet still packed up from their ocean voyage. What do you do: save your gear and equipment, start helping people get out of the burning inn, or grab your sword and run out into the street looking for whoever is attacking? It worked out great and to top it all off when the city guard showed up they got arrested for disturbing the peace.
