Snakes moving silently

Could it be an errata that no snakes in the SRD have any rank in Move Silently?

I don't think this is surprising. Most snakes are not prowling hunters, but rather lie in wait for prey to wander too close. Snakes are pretty lazy.

The time where I have been the closest to a wild, living snake was when I was attracted by the weird noise it was doing.

Granted, it was moving through polystyren bits in a in-construction house, but still...

Snakes can't move silently because of all the hissing they do while moving

They have a decent Dex Bonus and if it's an animal companion or familiar you can buy it ranks in MS.

Not all smakes move silently, and some species do lie in ambush for prey, but other species stalk their prey, and move very quietly when they feel the need. I'm suprised that they don't have any ranks in that skill. Strikes me that they should, even if they don't always use it.

I might not be very good in biology...

I thought the verb "to sneak" came from the reptiles way of moving, and to me sneak = hide + move silently.

How can I buy ranks for a Familiar? I think a Familiar has as many HD as the master wiz+sor levels for the only purpose of determining which spells affect it, but not for extra feats or skills (or hit points, which are always half the master's or as many as the MM entry, whichever is better).

A familiar has all your skill ranks, base attack bonus, base saves, etc - but with own attribute modifiers calculated in.

This makes the familiar of an Arcane Trickster quite a skillmonger!
