So, flight... (Let the headaches begin...)

With that being said: I personally have no problem answering questions of this nature as it is something I have been doing on the rules questions forums for nearly 15 years. With that being said however, RAW vs RAI means little in the scope of AL as DMs are given a lot more latitude to interpret the rules than in previous OPs. There simply is no "right way" to interpret the rules in AL and as long as DMs are not changing the rules or adding rules, items, content to an adventure - we are good.

Just as long as everyone knows that they will never be able to brow beat their DMs with a forum post regarding a general rules issue - i think these conversations are harmless distraction. IMHO they are fine on a forum but I agree that conversations like this have no place on the official social media sites (eg FB or Google+).

This post is just my personal opinion and is not said in an official capacity.

Oh, I absolutely agree Kalani, I give a lot of respect to any DM willing to run public games, and I would never cause issues at the table or anywhere else, social media or the like.

I'm not asking these questions to try and force anyone into a ruling or anything, I was just curious on how everyone else would rule this, since it is so vague.

And there were a lot of insightful posts here, and like I posted in my OP, I totally could see where he was coming from.

To me as a player and a fellow DM, it is my top priority to preserve the fun of the game at every session I play.

I have no problem getting told no, you can't do that... and I know a lot of DM's do have those problem players, but I am not one of them.

I will try things, mostly cause I'm creative... or at least I like to think I am, but I'm always prepared for that idea to be shot down.

I'll admit though, this time I was caught a bit off guard with this ruling, but I kept my cool and just came up with a quick back up plan for my turn.

I think it was mainly that I just never thought of flight in that way... but again, I can see where he got it from, and to keep things rolling in a positive light I just shrugged and said okay, well then I guess I'll try this...

I disagree, there is no 'interpretation' that forces a player to land every turn. That is a DM creating a new rule, not interpreting an existing grey area.

Yes a DM is the final 'arbiter', but that presumes there is a judgement call to make. the flying rules leave no such room.

True, there is no explicit rule saying you can keep flying turn after turn...but you also don't need one. There is a rule allowing you to fly up to a certain distance. Its just like you don't need an explicit rule saying you can walk up stairs, or walk in a curve, or walk in the same direction as last turn.... those are all already allowed by the general movement rule.

By saying you can't double your SA dice, that is not being an 'arbiter', that is making up new rules...(or changing current rules)
BY saying you must land after every move, that is not being an 'arbiter' that is making up new rules.

It also means that most flying creatures in the MM need to land every round.... bad news for that eagle...no soaring for him.
